Now Aadhar card cannot be made in Assam without National Citizen Register. On Saturday, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that those applying for new Aadhar card in the state will be required to submit National Register of Citizens (NRC) Application Receipt Number. He said that this will stop the identity cards being issued to illegal immigrants.

Speaking at a press conference on Saturday, Sarma said that the number of applications for Aadhaar cards has exceeded the state’s population, raising concerns about possible fraudulent applications. The chief minister said that in at least four districts, the number of Aadhaar card holders is more than the estimated population, which is a matter of concern.

‘More Aadhaar cards made than population’

He said, “The number of applications for Aadhar card is more than the population… which shows that there are suspicious citizens in the state and we have decided that new applicants will have to submit their NRC application receipt number. He said that the process of making new Aadhar cards in the state will be tightened, it will not be easy to get an Aadhar card in Assam now. The purpose of our move is to stop the influx of people illegally infiltrating the state.

The CM pointed out irregularities in some districts of the state and expressed concern over Dhubri district, saying, more Aadhar cards have been issued in Dhubri district than the population, it is possible that some suspicious people may have got Aadhar cards made.

Notification will be issued in 10 days!

He said that a formal notification is expected to be issued in the next 10 days, if you do not apply for NRC then you will not get Aadhar card under the new process. However, this rule will not be applicable in tea garden areas. In the rest of the districts, this rule will be strictly implemented from October 1.

‘The new rule will not apply to 9.55 people’

He clarified that the requirement to submit NRC application receipt number will not apply to the 9.55 lakh people whose biometrics were locked during the NRC process. These persons will be given Aadhaar cards without any additional conditions. Apart from this, Sarma reiterated his government’s commitment to intensify efforts to identify illegal immigrants in the state and revealed that several people from Bangladesh have been caught and handed over to the authorities in the last two months.
