LOS ANGELES – A Los Angeles-area high school student who was injured during a recent football game has died, the high school’s principal said in a letter to the community last week.
The Southeast High School student was injured Aug. 23 during a junior varsity game against the Maywood Center for Enriched Studies.
“I am saddened to report the recent death of one of our students,” Southeast High School Principal Eric James said in a message to the school community Wednesday.
“On behalf of our entire school community, I would like to express my deepest condolences. At this time, we request that the privacy of those affected be respected during this difficult time. Please know that our entire school community supports us,” James wrote in the message, provided by a spokesperson for the Los Angeles Unified School District.
The Los Angeles Times reported A student required medical attention after tackling another player on the sidelines of an Aug. 23 game.
The Los Angeles Unified School District did not release the student’s name, and James’ message to the school community did not identify the student.
Sandesh and the district have not specified the cause of death, or whether the death was football-related.
James said in the message that crisis counselors are available at the school for students who need extra support.
“Every member of the Southeast High School community matters and this loss affects us all,” he wrote.
A school district spokesperson said it is the district’s policy to have at least one medical personnel present at all football games.
The spokesperson said there were two medical staff at the game where the student was injured, and both attended to the student after the incident.
The National Center for Catastrophic Sport Injuries said there were a total of 16 deaths among youth league, middle school, high school and collegiate football players last year.
13 of them were directly or indirectly associated with football In the annual report.
Three were directly related to football participation in traumatic brain injury and 10 were indirectly related, including things like exertion and medical problems such as heatstroke and sudden cardiac arrest, the center said in the report.
Two were unrelated, and the cause of one death was unknown at the time of reporting, it said.
