Once again a complaint of harassment of a student has come to light in the hostel of Kolkata’s Jadavpur University. It is alleged that a computer engineering student was harassed on suspicion of theft. Due to this the student fell ill and was admitted to KPC Medical College.

The condition of the student is said to be stable at present. No written complaint has been lodged with the university authorities regarding this incident so far. But the university students claim that this is a case of ragging and due to this he fell ill.

The case started with the theft of a laptop

Sources claim that the student lives in the D block of the Jadavpur University main hostel. The case started after a laptop of a D block student was stolen last Monday. Tension escalated in the hostel on Wednesday night after a Computer Science first year student called him a ‘thief’. It is alleged that due to the slander, the Computer Science student got into an argument with others and fell ill.

Admitted to hospital due to high blood pressure

As soon as the information was received, the hostel warden reached the spot. After getting information from the officials, Medical Superintendent Dr. Mitali Dev also reached there. When she went and saw the student, he was sweating. The doctor suggested that he needs to be admitted to the hospital due to high blood pressure.

The student was advised to be hospitalised. It is also alleged that the medical superintendent and the warden faced ‘difficulties’ on the way to take him to the hospital. He was later admitted to a private hospital.

The complaint of ragging was termed baseless

However, Jadavpur University registrar Snehmanju Bose has claimed that the complaint of ragging in the main hostel is baseless. She told Aaj Tak, ‘I am aware of the matter. The student is fine now. I am taking the matter seriously. I am looking into what action can be taken in the incident. But no complaint of ragging has been received.’

The university’s medical superintendent Mitali Dev has also made a similar claim. Rejecting the allegations of ragging, she said, ‘After hearing the news, I went to the main hostel. I heard that there was a case of laptop theft. Then I saw that the student was ill. I felt that he needed to be admitted to the hospital and decided to admit him.’

Written complaint not lodged yet

He said, ‘While coming out, some people tried to stop me but I said that the student has not been ragged.’ No written complaint has been lodged with the university authorities regarding this incident so far. This new case has come to light exactly one year after the murder of a student in the hostel campus of Jadavpur University after he allegedly fell from the campus balcony.
