The man accused of attempting to murder renowned author Salman Rushdie has now been charged with supporting a terrorist organisation. According to documents unsealed on Wednesday, the accused has been charged with terrorism for allegedly acting at the behest of the terrorist group Hezbollah.

He lost his right eye in the attack

Hadi Matar, a 26-year-old Lebanese American, was previously accused of attacking Salman Rushdie with a knife. Now a grand jury has indicted him on three terrorism-related charges, including providing assistance to a foreign terrorist group.

The US Justice Department said that this organization is Iran-backed Hezbollah of Lebanon. Two years ago in August 2022, Rushdie lost his right eye in an attack by an attacker who jumped on the stage in New York. Rushdie was stabbed about 10 times.

Controversy started with the book ‘The Satanic Verses’

Salman Rushdie’s book ‘The Satanic Verses’ gave rise to controversies that remained with him throughout his life. His book was considered anti-Islam and blasphemous. Because of this, he received death threats from Iran in the 1980s. This book has been banned in Iran since 1988, but because of this Salman Rushdie has always been the target of extremists.

In 1989, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini issued a fatwa calling on Muslims around the world to kill Rushdie. The FBI said in a statement on Wednesday that Hezbollah supported the fatwa.

Hadi Matar followed the fatwa

Attorney General Merrick Garland said in a statement, “We allege that Hadi Matar, who attempted to assassinate Salman Rushdie in New York in 2022, committed a terrorist act on behalf of Hezbollah, a terrorist organization affiliated with the Iranian regime.”

FBI Director Christopher Ray said, ‘The accused tried to follow a fatwa supported by Hezbollah that called for the death of Salman Rushdie.’ In the other two cases in the indictment, Matar has been accused of engaging in a terrorist act and providing material support to terrorists.
