Bangladesh has objected to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s offer to provide shelter to refugees from the country. According to sources, the neighbouring country has said that terrorists can take advantage of such an announcement. In a massive ‘Shaheed Diwas’ rally of Trinamool Congress on July 21, Mamata Banerjee said that if people from violence-affected Bangladesh come knocking at our door, her government will provide them shelter.

What did Mamata Banerjee say?
Mamata Banerjee said that “I cannot say anything about Bangladesh because it is another country and the central government will speak on this subject, but if helpless people (from Bangladesh) knock on the door of Bengal, we will give them shelter. It is also a resolution of the United Nations that neighbors will respect refugees. “

The promise was reiterated on social media as well
The Trinamool Congress supremo reiterated the promise later in the day while posting on Twitter. “Hundreds of students and others are returning to West Bengal/India from crisis-hit Bangladesh. I have asked my state administration to provide all help and assistance to the returnees. For instance, around 300 students reached Hili border and most left safely for their respective destinations, however, 35 of them needed help and we provided them basic amenities and facility support.”

Bangladesh expressed strong objection
According to sources, the Bangladesh government has strongly objected to Mamata Banerjee’s comments before the Indian High Commission. Bangladesh said that such comments, especially the assurance of sheltering refugees, can provoke many people, especially terrorists and miscreants, to take advantage of such an announcement.
