Geeta, a woman with speech and hearing impairment who drew nationwide attention when she returned to India from Pakistan in 2015, has passed her Class 8 exams in first division. She now aspires to get the government job she has sought. 33-year-old Geeta scored 411 out of 600 marks with distinction in social sciences and Sanskrit in the Class 8 exams conducted by the Madhya Pradesh State Board of Open School Education, officials said on Wednesday.

Indore-based NGO Anand Service Society is trying to help Geeta integrate into the mainstream society after her return from the neighbouring country. Secretary of the NGO and sign language expert Gyanendra Purohit told PTI on Wednesday that Geeta is very excited about her exam result and is hopeful about her future.

Purohit said that during the video call, Geeta told him in sign language that she is willing to continue her studies besides doing a government job. He said that the minimum educational qualification for recruitment of Class IV employees of the central and state governments is passing class VIII. Geeta is now eligible to apply for government jobs in this category.

Geeta’s real name is Radha, she had reached Lahore by mistake

Purohit said that Geeta’s real name is Radha and she currently lives with her mother Meena Pandhare in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district of Maharashtra. He told that Geeta’s family is poor and she wants to work to become financially independent. She does not want to get married right now. Geeta’s age is said to be 33 years. She accidentally boarded a train in her childhood about 23 years ago and reached Pakistan. According to officials, she was found by Pakistan Rangers sitting alone in the Samjhauta Express at Lahore railway station.

Bilkis Edhi of Pakistan’s social organization ‘Edhi Foundation’ adopted this girl who was unable to hear and speak and kept her in Karachi. Due to the special efforts of the then Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj, Geeta was able to return to India on 26 October 2015. The next day she was sent to the residential complex of an NGO in Indore. Geeta is living in Maharashtra after finding her family in 2021.
