A Saurya Airlines plane crashed during takeoff at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, Nepal on Wednesday, July 24, 2024, resulting in the deaths of 18 out of the 19 people on board.
The Pokhara-bound flight suffered a runway excursion shortly after taking off around 11:15 am local time. A dramatic video captured the exact moment the plane crashed, showing it engulfed in flames after skidding off the runway.
Rescue operations are ongoing at the accident site, with police and firefighters recovering the bodies of five passengers so far. The pilot, Captain MR Shakya, survived the crash and is currently receiving medical treatment at Kathmandu Medical College Hospital.
The aircraft, a Bombardier CRJ 200 jet operated by Saurya Airlines, was carrying 17 company staff members and two crew members, according to Nepali police spokesman Dan Bahadur Karki.
Nepal’s aviation sector has seen rapid growth in recent years, but the expansion has been marred by poor safety standards, inadequate training, and maintenance issues. The European Union has banned all Nepali carriers from its airspace due to safety concerns.

The challenging geography of Nepal, with high-altitude runways surrounded by mountainous terrain, poses difficulties for even the most experienced pilots. Unpredictable weather in these regions further complicates aviation safety.
This tragic incident is the latest in a series of deadly plane crashes in Nepal. The country has a history of aviation accidents, with the most recent major crash occurring in January 2023, when a Yeti Airlines flight crashed while approaching Pokhara Airport, killing all 72 people on board.
The causes of the Saurya Airlines crash are still under investigation, but the incident has once again highlighted the urgent need for improved safety measures and infrastructure in Nepal’s aviation sector to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future.
