Hearing on NEET-UG

NEET-UG Exam Hearing: The Supreme Court on Monday began hearing petitions related to the controversial medical entrance exam NEET-UG 2024. A lawyer appearing for NEET-UG candidates told the apex court that the National Examination Agency (NTA) has admitted that the question paper was leaked and the leaked question paper was shared through WhatsApp. At the start of the hearing, a bench of Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud, Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Mishra asked the lawyers of the parties what has come out from the declaration of center-wise and city-wise results of the exam. The hearing of the case is going on.

Many examination centers are under investigation

An analysis of the NEET result data on Saturday revealed that while candidates who allegedly benefited from the question paper leak and other irregularities did not perform well, several students performed well in the exam at some centres. The NEET-UG results were declared on June 5 but have been published in this format following a Supreme Court order. Candidates who appeared for the exam at centres that came under scrutiny for alleged irregularities in the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET-UG) were comparatively poor. These centres include Oasis School in Hazaribagh, Jharkhand, Hardayal Public School in Jhajjar, Haryana and Jai Jalaram International School in Godhra, Gujarat.

Instructions to declare center wise and city wise results

On July 18, the Supreme Court had directed the NTA to declare the centre-wise and city-wise results of NEET-UG 2024 by 12 noon on July 20 while keeping the identity of the candidates confidential. The court had said that it wanted to find out whether the candidates who took the exam at the allegedly tainted centers got more marks than the candidates from other places. The bench is hearing more than 40 petitions, including the one filed by the NTA. The NTS has requested to transfer the cases pending against it in various high courts regarding alleged irregularities in the examination to the Supreme Court.

23.33 lakh candidates appeared in the exam

On May 5, more than 23.33 lakh candidates had taken the NEET-UG exam at 4,750 centers in 571 cities. These cities also included 14 foreign cities. The Center and NTA had said in their affidavits filed in the Supreme Court that canceling the exam in the absence of any evidence of large-scale privacy violation would be prejudicial and it would seriously endanger lakhs of honest candidates. NEET-UG exam is conducted by NTA for admission to MBBS, BDS, AYUSH and other related courses in government and private medical institutions across the country.
