Supreme Court granted bail to Ashish Mishra, son of former Union Minister

Lakhimpur Kheri Violence Case, Ashish Mishra, son of former Union Minister Ajay Mishra Teni, has got bail from the Supreme Court in the 2021 Lakhimpur-Kheri violence case. Supreme Court granted bail to Ashish Mishra

In the Lakhimpur Kheri violence case, the Supreme Court said that the interim bail granted to Ashish Mishra has been made absolute and some conditions of Ashish Mishra’s interim bail have been amended. He has been allowed to stay in Delhi or Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh. The court has also remarked that ‘there is a need to expedite the trial in the Lakhimpur Kheri violence case and has directed the concerned trial court to fix a schedule keeping in mind other pending important cases, but the pending subject trial will be given priority.’

‘Out of 117 witnesses, seven have been questioned so far’

On January 25 last year, the Supreme Court granted interim bail to Ashish Mishra in the case related to ‘this unfortunate and horrific incident’ of violence. A bench of Justice Suryakant and Justice Ujjal Bhuiyan also granted bail to the farmers accused in the case and directed the subordinate court to expedite the hearing. The bench said, ‘Keeping in view all the circumstances, the interim order is made a final order, we have been informed that out of 117 witnesses, seven have been examined so far. We feel that there is a need to expedite the trial proceedings.’ The Supreme Court has directed the subordinate court to fix a time limit for the hearing.

How did violence erupt in Lakhimpur-Kheri?

Violence broke out in the district after farmers protested against the visit of Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya to the area. During this, an SUV (sports utility vehicle) crushed four farmers. After this, angry farmers allegedly beat the driver and two Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers to death. A journalist also died in this violence.
