In a surprising move, Chinese President Xi Jinping reportedly wrote a letter to former U.S. President Donald Trump following the assassination attempt on Trump’s life last week. Trump revealed the contents of the letter during his first campaign rally since the incident, held in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

According to Trump, Xi’s letter described it as “beautiful”. The former president mentioned receiving the note while discussing his economic policy toward China.

Trump and Xi have had a complex relationship, marked by trade tensions and geopolitical rivalries. However, Trump stated that he and the Chinese leader “get along well”.

The assassination attempt occurred during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13th. A gunman opened fire on Trump, wounding him in the ear and killing a rally-goer. The Secret Service is investigating the security failures that allowed the shooter to scale a building and open fire from outside the perimeter.

Despite the attack, Trump appeared energized at the Grand Rapids rally, mocking Democrats and criticizing President Joe Biden’s performance. He also compared House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to a “dog” for her attempts to persuade Biden to end his re-election bid.

As Trump’s campaign gains momentum, the letter from Xi Jinping serves as a reminder of the complex geopolitical landscape he navigates. The two leaders’ relationship will likely continue to shape the U.S.-China dynamic in the months leading up to the 2024 presidential election.
