In a surprising turn of events, the man who attempted to assassinate former President Donald Trump at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania, Thomas Matthew Crooks, has been honored as an “American hero” by a small group of protesters outside the Republican National Convention venue .
Crooks, a 20-year-old registered Republican, opened fire on Trump’s rally on July 13th, grazing the former president’s ear with a bullet. He was fatally shot by Secret Service snipers shortly after. While the motive behind Crooks’ attack remains unclear, investigators have found photos of both Trump and President Biden on his phone, suggesting his political leanings were ambiguous .

Despite Crooks’ violent actions, a group of protesters gathered outside the RNC venue, carrying signs and chanting slogans praising him as a patriot and a hero for standing up against the “tyrannical” Trump . The protesters claimed Crooks’ attack was a justified act of resistance against a “fascist” former president.
Law enforcement officials have condemned the protesters’ actions, stating that Crooks’ attack was an act of domestic terrorism that resulted in the death of an innocent bystander and the injury of several others . The FBI continues to investigate the shooting, but has yet to determine a clear motive behind Crooks’ attempted assassination of Trump .
