Carer’s Allowance is a benefit provided by the UK’s Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) to support unpaid carers who provide at least 35 hours of care per week to someone with a disability. In 2024, the Carer’s Allowance payout amount will be £81.90 per week.
Eligibility
To be eligible for Carer’s Allowance in 2024, you must meet the following criteria:
- Be 16 years of age or older
- Spend at least 35 hours per week caring for someone who receives a qualifying disability benefit, such as Personal Independence Payment or Disability Living Allowance
- Have earnings of £151 or less per week after taxes, National Insurance, and eligible expenses
- Not be in full-time education or studying for more than 21 hours per week
- Normally live in England, Scotland, or Wales (or be a member of the armed forces living abroad)
- Have been in the UK for at least 2 out of the last 3 years (unless you’re a refugee or have humanitarian protection status)
If you live in certain areas of Scotland, you may need to apply for the Carer Support Payment instead of Carer’s Allowance.
How to Claim
To claim Carer’s Allowance, you’ll need to provide the following information:
- Your National Insurance number
- Bank or building society details
- Employment details and latest payslip (if working)
- P45 if you’ve recently finished work
- Course details if you’re studying
- Details of any expenses, such as pension contributions or care costs
You’ll also need details about the person you care for, including their address, date of birth, and National Insurance number (if over 16) or Disability Living Allowance reference (if under 16).

Carer’s Allowance Supplement
In addition to the weekly Carer’s Allowance payment, eligible carers in the UK will also receive a Carer’s Allowance Supplement of £288.60 paid in two installments in April and October 2024.
