Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer Urges Biden to Withdraw Nomination

According to multiple reports, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) have both pushed for Democratic officials to delay the vote to formally renominate President Joe Biden as the party’s candidate for the 2024 election. This comes as prominent Democrats, including California Congressman Adam Schiff, have publicly called for Biden to withdraw from the race.

Schiff, a key ally of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, stated that “while the choice to withdraw from the campaign is President Biden’s alone, I believe it is time for him to pass the torch.” Schiff cited Biden’s “dismal debate performance against Republican former President Donald Trump last month” as a key factor, noting that nearly two-thirds of Democrats nationwide say Biden should step aside and let the party nominate a different candidate.

The push to delay the virtual roll call vote to renominate Biden, which was originally planned for as early as this Sunday, comes amid growing concerns within the Democratic party about Biden’s viability as a candidate. The Democratic National Committee’s rulemaking arm has now decided to postpone the vote until at least August 1st, citing the need to avoid a “rushed virtual voting process” that could “deeply undermine the morale and unity of Democrats.”

While the Biden campaign has pointed to “extensive support” for the president’s reelection bid from members of Congress in key swing states, as well as from the Congressional Black and Hispanic caucuses, the growing chorus of prominent Democrats calling for him to withdraw suggests an increasingly fractured party. As the 2024 election cycle heats up, the pressure on Biden to step aside appears to be mounting.
