The United States has affirmed that it will continue to view India as a strategic partner despite concerns over India’s relationship with Russia, following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Moscow.

In response to PM Modi’s two-day trip to Russia for the 22nd India-Russia annual summit, Pentagon Press Secretary Major General Pat Ryder stated that “India and Russia have had a relationship for a very long time. From a US perspective, India is a strategic partner with whom we continue to engage in full and frank dialogue to include their relationship with Russia.”

Ryder acknowledged that Russian President Vladimir Putin may try to portray PM Modi’s visit as a sign that he is not isolated from the rest of the world. However, Ryder emphasized that “the fact of the matter is President Putin’s war of choice has isolated Russia from the rest of the world, and it has come at great cost.”

The Pentagon spokesperson reassured that “we will continue to view India as a strategic partner. We will continue to have a robust dialogue with them.” He expressed trust that India will support efforts to achieve “an enduring and just peace for Ukraine” and convey to Putin the importance of adhering to the UN Charter and principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Similarly, US State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller reiterated that the US has “expressed those [concerns about India’s Russia relationship] privately directly to the Indian government, and continue to do so. And that has not changed.” He stated that the US continues to urge India to support efforts for a peaceful resolution in Ukraine based on the UN Charter.

While acknowledging India’s longstanding ties with Russia, the Biden administration has emphasized the importance of India using its influence to press Russia to end the Ukraine conflict. The US appears to be striking a balance, maintaining India as a strategic partner while urging New Delhi to leverage its relationship with Moscow for a peaceful outcome in Ukraine.
