A mass shooting incident at the Imam Ali Mosque in the Wadi Al Kabir area of Muscat, Oman has claimed the lives of over 30 people, including one Indian national, with the firing continuing for a third consecutive day.

The attack occurred late on Monday evening as Shia Muslims were observing Ashura, an annual period of mourning commemorating the 7th-century death of Imam Hussein, a grandson of the Prophet Muhammad. The Islamic State (ISIS) has claimed responsibility for the attack, stating that three of its jihadists carried it out.

According to the Royal Oman Police, six people, including a police officer, were killed in the shooting, and 28 others from various nationalities were wounded, including rescuers and paramedics. The police have stated that “all necessary security measures and procedures have been taken to handle the situation” and that they are continuing to gather evidence and investigate the circumstances of the incident.

The Indian Embassy in Muscat has confirmed that one Indian national was killed and another was injured in the attack. Additionally, Pakistan has stated that four of its citizens were among those who died in what it termed a “terrorist attack”.

Oman is a country known for its relative stability and low levels of violence, making this attack a rare and shocking occurrence. Shiites make up a small minority of Oman’s predominantly Muslim population, and the country has not seen similar attacks on Shia mosques in recent years, unlike some of its neighbors in the Gulf region.

The investigation into the motives and circumstances surrounding this attack is ongoing, and the authorities in Oman are working to restore calm and security in the area.
