On Tuesday, a Columbus, Ohio police officer fatally shot a man wielding two knives near the Republican National Convention (RNC) in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The shooting occurred approximately five blocks beyond the outer security boundary of the convention, within the operational zone assigned to the Columbus police officers.
The incident took place close to King Park, about a mile away from the convention site, where a group of teenagers were playing basketball. Surveillance video obtained by the Wisconsin Examiner shows two men fighting in the street when the police officers arrived and immediately opened fire on one of the men.
The victim, identified as Sam Sharpe, was a homeless man known to live in a tent encampment in King Park with his dog[5]. Residents of the neighborhood expressed concerns about the presence of out-of-state officers in their community and questioned why the Ohio police were outside the designated RNC security zone.
Milwaukee Police Chief Jeffrey Norman had previously stated that cops from outside agencies would not be patrolling beyond the convention’s security footprint. However, with thousands of police officers from federal, state, and local agencies across the country in the city for the RNC, the incident has raised questions about the coordination and oversight of law enforcement operations.

The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed that an autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday. The Columbus Police Union stated that two officers were involved in the shooting, and while they were expected to leave, the remaining 38 officers sent to Milwaukee would stay to complete their mission.
The shooting has sparked outrage among community members, who feel that the presence of out-of-state officers in their neighborhoods is a threat to their safety. A candlelight vigil is planned for 8 p.m. at King Park to honor the victim.
