According to multiple reports, the Biden administration recently obtained intelligence about an Iranian plot to assassinate former President Donald Trump. In response, the White House National Security Council contacted senior officials at the Secret Service to ensure they were tracking the latest threat information, and the Secret Service subsequently increased security resources and assets for the protection of the former president.
The heightened threat from Iran is believed to be linked to the Trump administration’s 2020 drone strike that killed Qassem Soleimani, a prominent figure in Iran’s Quds Force. Iran has been continually plotting harm to current and former American officials and military officers involved in that operation, and the Biden administration has been monitoring these threats for years.
While the details of the Iranian plot remain uncertain, the Secret Service acted quickly to bolster Trump’s security in advance of a Republican National Convention event on Saturday where an unrelated assassination attempt took place. Authorities have confirmed that the 20-year-old gunman in the Pennsylvania shooting acted alone and had no ties to any foreign or domestic accomplices.

The White House emphasized that it considers the Iranian threats a matter of the highest national and homeland security priority. The administration has invested significant resources into developing information about these threats, disrupting the individuals involved, and enhancing protective arrangements for potential targets like former Trump officials.
In response to the Iranian plot, the Secret Service increased its security presence around Trump, though the campaign declined to provide specifics. The revelation of the heightened threat comes as both the Secret Service and the Department of Homeland Security face scrutiny following the weekend’s failed assassination attempt.
