JD Vance, the Republican US Senator from Ohio, has expressed his gratitude and honor at being selected as Donald Trump’s running mate for the 2024 presidential election.
In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), Vance said: “Just overwhelmed with gratitude. What an honor it is to run alongside President Donald J. Trump. He delivered peace and prosperity once, and with your help, he’ll do it again. Onward to victory!”
Vance’s selection as Trump’s vice presidential candidate comes after years of the senator criticizing the former president, before later embracing his populist ideology. Trump praised Vance’s background, stating that he “honorably served our Country in the Marine Corps, graduated from Ohio State University in two years, Summa Cum Laude, and is a Yale Law School Graduate.”
The former president also highlighted Vance’s bestselling memoir “Hillbilly Elegy” and his successful business career, saying he will “be strongly focused on the people he fought so brilliantly for, the American Workers and Farmers in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio, Minnesota, and far beyond.”

Vance, who was elected to the Senate in 2022 with Trump’s support, has been a vocal supporter of the former president in Congress, frequently voting in line with his positions. This includes opposing increased aid to Ukraine earlier this year, echoing Trump’s criticism.
The selection of Vance as Trump’s running mate has surprised some, as Marco Rubio of Florida and Governor Doug Burgum of North Dakota were previously considered frontrunners for the role. However, Trump praised Vance’s qualifications and expressed confidence that he will help “MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN” as vice president.
