Powerful storms swept through the Des Moines metro area on Monday evening, leaving behind a trail of destruction. A tornado was spotted near Drake Stadium in downtown Des Moines, and a video captured significant damage to a home in Urbandale
The storm system brought down power lines, toppled trees, and damaged homes across the region. Thousands of residents were left without power following the severe weather.
In Urbandale, a home on 80th Street sustained major damage, with the entire side of the garage ripped off. KCCI viewer Alex Colby shared a video showing the aftermath of the storm in the 1800 block of 59th Street.
The Des Moines Police Department reported multiple utility poles snapped in half in the 6200 block of Hickman Road. Officers urged residents to avoid areas with storm damage unless necessary.

Damage was also reported near 40th and Ingersoll in Des Moines, where large trees and power lines were downed. The city of Des Moines posted several damage photos on social media, primarily from the area around Roosevelt High School.
The National Weather Service had issued a severe thunderstorm watch for most of central and eastern Iowa, with the potential for damaging wind gusts up to 80 mph and possible tornadoes. The storms were expected to continue in eastern Iowa but should diminish in the Des Moines metro area by Monday evening.
As the cleanup begins, residents are advised to stay away from damaged areas and allow emergency crews to assess and clear the damage. The severe weather serves as a reminder of the importance of being prepared and staying vigilant during extreme storm events.
