The Karnataka Cabinet on Monday decided to implement the recommendations of the Seventh Pay Commission. The recommendations will be implemented from August 1. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is expected to announce the decision in the Assembly on Tuesday, official sources said. The move will benefit over seven lakh state government employees.

Recommendation of 27.5 percent increase in basic salary

The Seventh Pay Commission, headed by former Chief Secretary K Sudhakar Rao, has recommended a 27.5 percent hike in the basic salary of government employees. This is estimated to put an additional burden of Rs 17,440.15 crore annually on the government treasury.

The Siddaramaiah government was under pressure to take a decision regarding salary hike ever since the Karnataka State Government Employees Association announced its plan to go on an indefinite strike from August.

Former CM had increased it by 17 percent

The then Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai had increased the salary of employees by 17 per cent on an interim basis in March 2023. The Siddaramaiah government can increase it by 10.5 per cent. Sources said that under the recommendations of the Seventh Pay Commission, this would result in a total increase of 27.5 per cent in the basic salary.
