BJP in Rajya Sabha

Bharatiya Janata Party’s numbers in Rajya Sabha fall below 90.

parliament news, For the first time in the last few years, the number of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) members in the Rajya Sabha has fallen below 90. However, after the by-elections to fill the existing vacancies, the BJP and its allies will not only be able to make up for the recent losses but will also strengthen their position.

How many seats are expected to be won in which state

On the basis of its numerical strength, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is confident of winning two seats each in Bihar, Maharashtra and Assam and one seat each in Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Tripura. Four new members are yet to be nominated by the government. Generally, nominated members are with the ruling party. However, they are free to associate themselves with any party or not. They traditionally support the agenda of the government that nominates them.

Which party has how many members in Rajya Sabha?

The total number of members in the Rajya Sabha is currently 226. Of these, BJP has 86, Congress 26 and Trinamool Congress 13 members. Currently 19 posts are vacant. The ruling Congress is trying to win the by-election to the only seat in Telangana. This seat has fallen vacant due to the resignation of K Keshav Rao of Bharat Rashtra Samiti (BRS). Rao has now joined the Congress. Even if it wins this seat in Telangana, it is almost certain to lose a seat in Rajasthan because BJP has a strong majority here.

On which seat is Congress expected to win?

This seat in the Rajya Sabha from Rajasthan has fallen vacant due to senior Congress member KC Venugopal winning the Lok Sabha election from Alappuzha in Kerala. The BJP is also confident of winning the only seat in Haryana where elections are to be held to fill the vacancy caused by Rajya Sabha member Deepender Singh Hooda’s election to the Lok Sabha. However, the Congress is hopeful that it may get the support of some independent or regional party-affiliated MLAs. Congress leaders believe that some MLAs looking for political options before the assembly elections in October may switch sides and due to this it can give a tough fight to the BJP in the Rajya Sabha elections.

The Election Commission has not yet announced the date of elections to fill the 11 seats vacated by the resignation of 11 members. Of these, 10 members have been elected to the Lok Sabha while BRS Keshav Rao resigned after joining the Congress. A total of 19 seats are vacant in the 245-member Rajya Sabha. Of these, four are from Jammu and Kashmir. This erstwhile state was made a Union Territory in 2019. The Legislative Assembly has not been formed there yet.
