Donald Trump Narrowly Escapes Assassination Attempt at Pennsylvania Rally

On Saturday, July 14th, 2024, former President Donald Trump was the target of an assassination attempt during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Slow-motion video footage shows that Trump’s quick reflexes and a simple head tilt likely saved his life.

The incident occurred about six minutes into Trump’s speech, when shots rang out from a nearby building. Eyewitnesses reported that the gunfire appeared to originate from a one-story building with a white roof, situated to the right of the stage where Trump was speaking.

In the video, Trump can be seen tilting his head to the side just moments before a bullet whizzes past, narrowly missing his head. Secret Service agents immediately rushed to cover and evacuate the 78-year-old candidate, who was left with a minor wound on his upper right ear.

The shooter was identified as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, a registered Republican from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania. Crooks had positioned himself on the roof of the nearby building and opened fire on the stage with an AR-15-style rifle. He was shot and killed by Secret Service snipers shortly after the attack began

One rally attendee was killed in the shooting, and two others were critically wounded before Crooks was neutralized. The attack was the first shooting of a US presidential candidate since the 1981 assassination attempt on Ronald Reagan.

Trump later took to his social media platform Truth Social to describe the incident, saying “I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear. Much bleeding took place.” The former president was transported to safety and is reported to be in stable condition, with no life-threatening injuries.

The shooting has sent shockwaves through the 2024 presidential race, raising urgent questions about the security provided to candidates. It is sure to reshape the final months of the campaign as Trump and President Joe Biden prepare to face off in a rematch of the 2020 election.
