In a shocking incident, former U.S. President Donald Trump was the target of an alleged assassination attempt during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on Saturday. Video footage has emerged showing the dramatic response by Secret Service snipers and counter-assault teams as shots rang out.

The shooter, identified as Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, from Bethel Park, Pa., was fatally shot by Secret Service personnel after firing multiple shots from an elevated position outside the rally venue. Crooks was armed with an AR-style rifle and positioned on a shed roughly 200-300 feet from the stage where Trump was speaking.

As the gunfire erupted, Secret Service agents immediately rushed the stage and surrounded Trump, who was hit in the upper right ear by a bullet. The 78-year-old former president grimaced and clutched his ear, with blood visible on his face. However, he turned back to the crowd and repeatedly raised his fist as the security officials escorted him to safety.

“I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear,” Trump later posted on Truth Social. “I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin.”

The Secret Service’s counter-sniper team, codenamed “Hercules,” and the counter assault team, known as “Hawkeye,” were both present at the rally to address potential threats. Footage shows two armed officials aiming at the gunman after the shots rang out.

One rally attendee was killed and two more were critically wounded in the attack. The FBI, in collaboration with the Secret Service and local law enforcement, is leading the investigation into the incident, which is being treated as an attempted assassination.

The shooting comes just two days before the start of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, where Trump was expected to attend. Authorities are working to determine if Trump was the sole target or if other candidates or attendees were also at risk.

The video of the Secret Service’s swift and decisive action has sent shockwaves through the political landscape, underscoring the importance of security measures at high-profile events. As the investigation continues, the nation grapples with the implications of this brazen attack on a former president and the potential impact on the upcoming election cycle.
