Richard Simmons, the legendary fitness icon, passed away at the age of 76 just a day after celebrating his birthday. In a heartfelt message shared shortly before his death, Simmons expressed his gratitude for the outpouring of birthday wishes from his fans.
“Thank you…I never got so many messages about my birthday in my life! I am sitting here writing emails. Have a most beautiful rest of your Friday. Love, Richard,” he wrote in a social media post.
In a rare interview with People magazine, Simmons shared his feelings about life and turning 76, saying “I feel good! I am grateful that I’m here, that I am alive for another day. I’ll spend my birthday doing what I do every day, which is to help people.”
Simmons was found unresponsive by his housekeeper on the day of his death, and paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene. Foul play was not suspected, and he appeared to have died from natural causes.
