An American Airlines flight from San Francisco to Miami had to be evacuated on Friday after a fire broke out in the cabin due to a smoking laptop in a passenger’s bag.
The incident occurred around 12:15 PM local time as the Airbus A321 aircraft was preparing to depart San Francisco International Airport (SFO). Crew members reported smoke coming from a passenger’s bag, which was quickly removed.
All passengers were evacuated from the plane, with some using the emergency slides and others exiting through the jet bridge. Three passengers sustained minor injuries during the evacuation, and one was transported to a hospital for treatment.
American Airlines confirmed that the smoke was caused by a fire in a laptop battery inside a passenger’s bag. The airline praised its crew members for their “professionalism” in handling the incident and apologized to customers for the inconvenience.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has launched an investigation into the incident. The flight, originally scheduled to depart at 12:17 PM, was delayed and is now set to leave SFO at 5 PM local time.

Videos have emerged on social media showing passengers evacuating the plane and the aftermath, with firefighters seen placing what appears to be the laptop in a tub of water to extinguish the fire.
This incident serves as a reminder of the potential risks posed by lithium-ion batteries in electronic devices and the importance of proper handling and storage to prevent such incidents from occurring on flights.
