A Ugandan Olympic marathon runner living in Kenya was attacked and set on fire by her boyfriend on Sunday, police said.
First-time Olympian Rebecca Cheptegi, 33, had an argument with her boyfriend Dixon Ndima at the recent Paris Games. During the altercation, Ndima allegedly grabbed a jerrycan of gasoline, poured it on Cheptegi and set him on fire, according to Police Commander Jeremiah Ole Kosiome.
Over 75% of the Olympian’s body was burnt in the attack.
The argument allegedly started as a dispute over the land on which the house was built.
“The couple was heard arguing outside their house. During the altercation, the boyfriend was seen pouring liquid on the woman before setting her on fire,” Koisom said. said by the BBC.
Cheptegi reportedly bought the property located in Trans Nzola to be close to the athletic training facilities.
The Ugandan sprinter finished 44th at the Olympic Summer Games held in Paris.
Before that, she won the Padua Marathon in 2022, finished second in the 10,000-meter Uganda Championships and fourth in the ADNOC Abu Dhabi Marathon.
The incident is under investigation.
