Voting will be held for assembly by-elections in 13 constituencies of Bihar, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab and Himachal Pradesh. The campaign for the by-elections to be held on all these seats ended on 8 July. This time everyone’s eyes will be on the by-elections, especially on Himachal Pradesh, where voting will be held on three seats of Dehra, Hamirpur and Nalagarh, which were vacated by independent MLAs who joined the BJP. Although the Congress has crossed the majority mark of 35 seats in the assembly by winning four out of six seats in the by-elections held along with the recent Lok Sabha elections, the BJP is expecting unexpected gains on these three seats.

In the first election being held after the Lok Sabha elections-2024, along with many big names, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu’s wife Kamlesh Thakur, who is entering the electoral fray for the first time, is also trying her luck. The assembly seats where by-elections are to be held include Raiganj, Ranaghat South, Bagda and Maniktala (West Bengal), Badrinath and Mangalore (Uttarakhand), Jalandhar West (Punjab), Dehra, Hamirpur and Nalagarh (Himachal Pradesh), Rupauli (Bihar), Vikravandi (Tamil Nadu) and Amarwara (Madhya Pradesh). These by-elections are being held due to the seats falling vacant due to the death or resignation of the current members.
