By-election on Jalandhar West seat

Jalandhar West By-election 2024, Jalandhar West seat of Punjab is also among the 13 seats in 7 states of the country where by-elections are being held. Voting will be held here on July 10. About three months ago, Jalandhar West MLA Sheetal Angural resigned, after which the election is being held on this seat. He left AAP and joined BJP, due to which by-elections have to be held in this major Doaba region. Voting will be held on July 10 while the results will be declared on July 13.

Angural had tendered his resignation on March 28, a day after joining the BJP. The seat from 34-Jalandhar West (SC) Assembly Constituency fell vacant after his resignation was accepted by the Speaker. With Angural’s resignation, the number of elected AAP MLAs in the 117-member House came down from 92 to 91.

You put all your effort

All parties have put in their best efforts to woo voters in Jalandhar West Assembly constituency. While AAP campaigned aggressively by organising 12 rallies and 6 road shows under the leadership of CM Bhagwant Mann, Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party campaigned door-to-door and also made personal contact. The ruling AAP was able to win only three seats in the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections. AAP has made retaining this seat a matter of prestige.

Bhagwant Mann actively campaigned for party candidate Mohinder Bhagat. He has promised voters that he will spend 3-4 days per week here to address the grievances of the people of the Doaba region, besides hinting at giving Bhagat a ministerial berth if he wins. Almost all 85 MLAs of the party, including cabinet ministers and three MPs, were present on the ground to campaign for Bhagat.

Congress’s Channi won the Lok Sabha seat

On the other hand, Congress is hoping for an icing on the cake after its candidate former CM Charanjit Singh Channi won the Jalandhar seat by a comfortable margin in the Lok Sabha elections. Channi got a lead of 1,557 votes from this constituency and has put in all efforts for the victory of Congress candidate Surinder Kaur here. Surinder Kaur has been the senior deputy mayor and has been a municipal councilor five times.

The litmus test for BJP and Angural

The victory of BJP’s Angural will vindicate his decision to break ties with AAP and join the saffron party ahead of the parliamentary elections. The by-election is being held due to his resignation from the AAP MLA post a day after joining the BJP. Bhojpuri film star Dinesh Lal Yadav, popularly known as Nirahua, held a public rally in favour of Angural, while noted Hindi and Punjabi actress Preeti Sapru held door-to-door meetings in the constituency. Senior BJP leaders, including BJP state president Sunil Jakhar, national general secretary Tarun Chugh, also camped in the city.
