Bridge collapse incident in Bihar, The matter of collapse of bridges one after another in Bihar has now reached the Supreme Court. In this regard, a petition has been filed in the Supreme Court demanding the Bihar government to conduct a high-level structural audit of all existing and under-construction bridges in the state and issue instructions to demolish or remove them if needed. Petitioner and lawyer Brajesh Singh on Wednesday urged the apex court to issue instructions to the Bihar government to conduct an audit.

Demand for immediate hearing on the issue of bridge collapse

The petitioner said that the issue of bridge collapse in Bihar should be considered by the apex court immediately. Within two years, there have been several incidents of collapse of three major under-construction bridges and large, medium and small bridges. Some people have died and many have been injured in these incidents. He said that more such incidents may happen in future due to the gross negligence of the government and the corrupt nexus of contractors and concerned agencies.

Said, people’s lives are in danger

“It is a matter of grave concern that in a state like Bihar, which is one of the most flood-prone states in India, the lives of people are being endangered by such incidents. The total flood-affected area in the state is 68,800 sq km which is 73.06 per cent of the total geographical area. Therefore, such regular incidents of bridge collapse in Bihar are extremely disastrous and endanger the lives of people on a large scale. Hence, immediate intervention of this court is required to save the lives of people,” the petitioner said. Many bridges collapsed while still under construction.

Demand to formulate a policy or mechanism for monitoring bridges

The petitioner has sought appropriate direction to the State of Bihar to formulate proper policy or mechanism for monitoring of constructed, old and under construction bridges, particularly in respect of bridges falling under the jurisdiction of the respondent, State of Bihar. The petitioner has sought creation of an efficient permanent body comprising high level experts for continuous monitoring of all existing and under construction bridges in Bihar, particularly through law or order.
