Protesters entered the PM House in Bangladesh
Thousands of protesters in Bangladesh on Monday broke into Sheikh Hasina’s official residence in the capital Dhaka and vandalised it. The protesters smashed the statue of her father Mujiburahman with hammers and set fire to her party offices. 76-year-old Hasina has resigned amid massive protests against her government.
Why did violence erupt in Bangladesh?
The protests, which began last month with demands for the abolition of the quota system that reserves 30% of government jobs for the families of freedom fighters who fought in Bangladesh’s war of independence against Pakistan in 1971, later turned into anti-government demonstrations. Jubilant crowds took to the streets across the country to celebrate their victory after army chief General Waqar-uz-Zaman announced Sheikh Hasina’s resignation.
Hammer was used on the statue of Sheikh Mujibur
Sheikh Hasina’s resignation ended her 15 years in power. Thousands of protesters violated a military curfew and stormed her official residence. Videos on social media showed protesters climbing a statue of Sheikh Mujiburahman, the hero of the 1971 Liberation War and Sheikh Hasina’s father, in Dhaka and smashing it with hammers.
