In a ceremony organized to mark the 75th anniversary of the establishment of the Supreme Court, Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal said that all types of matters were settled in the Lok Adalat held from July 29 to August 3. He described this initiative of the Supreme Court as very strong. Arjun Ram Meghwal said, ‘The first Lok Adalat in this country was set up by Lord Krishna. When Duryodhan did not accept his proposal, a problem arose. Then Dinkar Sahib wrote that if you want justice, give half, but if there is any obstacle in that too, then give only five grams, keep your entire land!’

The Union Law Minister further said, ‘When Duryodhan could not give even that, Krishna said – When destruction looms over man, first his conscience dies. Lok Adalats do the work of awakening conscience. Chief Justice sahab told me that more than 1000 cases have been settled in these Lok Adalats. That means there is something in the Supreme Court that our existence does not fade away. One should have a different behavior to do this work. The most successful person in the world is the one who knows how to mend the broken and pacify the angry. CJI sahab has done a great job. I congratulate everyone who participated in providing quick justice to the people through Lok Adalat.’

Supreme Court belongs to the whole country, not just Delhi: CJI

CJI said, ‘The Supreme Court may be in Delhi, but it is not only Delhi’s, it is the Supreme Court of the whole country. It has been my endeavor that officers from different parts of the country should be included in the registry. For settlement of cases in Lok Adalat, we kept two judges and two members of the bar in each panel. The purpose was that there should be proper representation of lawyers as well. During this, judges and lawyers got a chance to understand each other. National Legal Services Authority i.e. NALSA has settled 8.1 crore cases last year.’

Justice DY Chandrachud said, ‘Many times I am asked why the Supreme Court is giving so much importance to such a small case? What is its purpose? Then I answer that the constitution makers like Dr. Ambedkar made provision for Article 136 in the Constitution. The purpose of establishing the Supreme Court was to make justice accessible to the people standing at the bottom of the society. The idea behind the establishment of the Supreme Court was not that we should settle only 180 constitutional cases on the lines of the US Supreme Court. Rather, the purpose of its establishment was to ensure access to justice to the people, that is, to realize the principle of ‘justice at everyone’s door’.

Judges do not rest and work even after 4 p.m.

In his address, he further said, ‘Many times people get so upset with the legal process that they just want to get away from the court by making any kind of settlement. This is a matter of concern. The purpose of Lok Adalats is to make people feel that judges are connected to their lives. We may be at the top of the judiciary but we are connected to people’s lives. People may think that judges stop working after 4 pm but it is not so. They read the files of the cases listed for the next day. On weekends, judges do not take rest but travel so that they can reach out to the society.’
