The US has cancelled the deal made with the culprits of 9/11 attacks, under which they could have been saved from the death penalty. Mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed is also included in this. US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin announced this. There was a lot of criticism about this deal related to saving the culprits from the death penalty. There was a lot of opposition from the Republican Party.
Lloyd Austin removed Susan Escalier, the supervisor of Cuba’s Guantanamo War Court, from the case after reaching a pre-trial deal in the case and took full responsibility of the case. He said, “Using my authority, I withdraw all three pre-trial agreements with immediate effect.”

The culprits were ready to confess their crime
The plea agreements with the 9/11 convicts faced opposition from many Republican lawmakers, including House Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, who criticized the agreements. The Defense Secretary’s decision comes at a time when three convicts, including Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, agreed to plead guilty.
There was a deal to abolish the death penalty
Three criminals are imprisoned in Cuba’s Guantanamo Bay prison and were sentenced to death. Under the deal, the death sentence of the criminals was to be canceled, which was widely criticized. Khalid Sheikh Mohammed is known as the most notorious prisoner in Guantanamo Bay. He is in Cuba’s Guantanamo Bay prison, built to detain the suspects of the September 11 attack.
It is worth noting that 3000 people died in the 9/11 attack. Apart from Khalid Khaish, the plea deal also included the names of Walid Muhammad Saleh Mubarak bin Attash and Mustafa Ahmed Adam al Hausawi, whose death sentence was to be canceled.
