A case of negligence of MCD has come to light in Delhi, in which a seven-year-old child narrowly escaped death. The child, studying in class 3 in a public school in South Delhi, fell into a manhole covered with cardboard in Block D of Defense Colony on Friday. At around 8 in the morning, the boy’s father was dropping him to school. His mother and younger sister were also with him.

When the boy got out of the car outside the school, he inadvertently stepped on a cardboard sheet under which there was a manhole. The cardboard broke due to the weight and the child fell into the manhole. People standing nearby and the child’s parents immediately came into action and managed to rescue him from the sewer. The boy was immediately taken to AIIMS Trauma Center, where he was given first aid.

The child’s father, who is a bank employee, said that the manhole cover was kept aside at the same place and a cardboard cover was put on the open portion. In the video viral on social media, the child’s father was seen blaming the MCD for the accident. He questioned the audit of manholes in the city and said that MCD officials should take responsibility for this accident.

The child’s father said, ‘What would have happened if an elderly person or woman had fallen into the manhole? Which authority should be held responsible for this incident?’. Police said that they have not yet received any complaint from the child’s parents. This incident happened a few days after a woman and her son died after falling into an under-construction drain in Ghazipur area.

After a little heavy rain, the problem of severe waterlogging is being seen all over Delhi. On July 27, three students preparing for UPSC died due to drowning after rainwater filled in the basement of RAU’S IAS Coaching Center located in Old Rajendra Nagar area.
