The NEET PG 2024 exam, which is scheduled for August 11, 2024, has once again caused massive anxiety among medical aspirants across the country. The announcement of the new normalisation formula just a month ago and the sudden changes made at the last minute have added to the already heightened anxiety of the students. This comes after the previous cancellation of the exam, which was cancelled just ten hours before it was to begin, causing further distress to the students.

1.5 to 2 lakh medical students are now preparing for NEET PG and are being allotted haphazard and inconvenient exam centres. According to reports, many students have been allotted centres from north to south and south to north, forcing them to travel 1000 to 3000 kilometres. This is causing immense difficulties for students, be it logistical or financial.

Expressing concern, Dr Laxya Mittal, President, United Doctors Front, said, “NBEMS, which is the autonomous body responsible for conducting these exams, should be held responsible for this chaos and should be reformed or replaced. It is their responsibility to conduct the exams in a systematic manner and allocate convenient exam centres to the students as per their choice.”

In a conversation with Aaj Tak, many students shared their problems. Dr Alisha, a resident of Jhunjhunu in Rajasthan, had chosen Jaipur as her preferred examination center, but she was allotted an examination center in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, which is about 800 km from her residence. She said, ‘Sikar, Delhi and Bhopal were my other preferred options. I did not choose Ahmedabad at all.’ Dr Alisha also expressed concern about the disruptions in rail and air traffic due to heavy rains and the uncertainty about the morning or evening examination shift, which has made it difficult to book tickets. She said, ‘The pressure of this exam, traveling so far, finding a hotel and dealing with language barriers is increasing my anxiety.’

Students expressed their displeasure on social media

Another NEET PG candidate from Jaipur, Sonia Chaudhary, was allotted an exam centre in Jabalpur while her preferred centres were Jaipur, Sikar, Delhi NCR and Ujjain. She explained, ‘The distance between Jaipur and Jabalpur is more than 800 kilometres. I don’t know if rail or air traffic will reach on time due to the current weather conditions and travelling by car will take around 20 hours. The financial cost of long-distance travel and accommodation has become a cause of concern for many students, adding to their stress.

The students’ anger is clearly visible on social media. Delhi resident Dr Fahad Saifi jokingly tweeted, “My centre is in Kerala.” Another user, Dr Sakshi Gupta, commented sarcastically on the irony of the situation, “NBEMS- who said it is just a medical board? The way it has promoted tourism and hotel business is amazing. Kabhi kabhi aspirants ke bhi soch lena chahiye sirji.”

Student organizations appealed to the government for a solution

In response to the growing resentment, various student organisations have been requesting the government to resolve the issue. Congress party chief whip Kodikunnil Suresh met Health Minister JP Nadda to discuss the problem. He wrote in a post, ‘Met Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda and expressed my concern over NEET PG exam centre allocation. The minister showed a positive attitude towards my appeal and ensured immediate intervention.’

The repeated hurdles of the NEET PG 2024 exam have left medical aspirants in a state of uncertainty and frustration, demanding immediate action from the authorities to resolve these issues and ensure a fair and accessible examination process.
