Sawan Shivratri 2024: Sawan Shivratri fast is being observed on 2nd August i.e. today. The festival of Shivratri is celebrated on Chaturdashi Tithi of Krishna Paksha in Sawan. On this day, Lord Shiva’s favourite things are offered to please him. It is believed that one must listen to the story on Sawan Shivratri.
Story of Shivaratri fast (Sawan Shivratri Vrat Katha)
In ancient times, a hunter used to hunt animals and feed his family. But one day, the hunter did not get a chance to hunt any animal. Now, since his family’s food was filled through this, the hunter became very worried. He started fearing that his whole family would have to sleep hungry. By nightfall, the hunter got tired and went to a lake in the forest. There he quenched his thirst and sat on a vine tree. The hunter was hopeful that now some animal would definitely come near this lake.

The hunter’s hopes were not dashed. Yes, in a short while a deer came there. The hunter was overjoyed to see the deer. He immediately took out his bow and got ready to attack. But while doing so, some leaves of the tree fell on the Shivling lying below. Now the hunter was not aware that a Shivling was installed under that tree. Hearing the sound of the leaves, the deer became alert and said in panic, ‘Don’t kill me’. But the hunter was ignoring her because she had to satisfy the hunger of her family. Hearing this, the deer assured that she would return after leaving her children with her master. Hearing this, the hunter melted and let her go.
After some time another deer came near the lake. Now seeing it the hunter again took out his bow and arrow. The tree got a jolt and the leaves of the vine fell on the Shivling. Thus the hunter’s worship of the second prahar was also completed. Now seeing the hunter, the deer pleaded for mercy and requested him not to kill her. But again the hunter rejected her plea for mercy. Seeing this the deer said ‘Hunter, the person who does not keep his word, all the virtues of his life are destroyed. Have faith, I will definitely come back’. Now the hunter let this deer go too.
Now after releasing the two deers, the hunter thought that his family will sleep hungry today. But then a deer came. Like before, the hunter took out his bow and arrow and started aiming. In this process, some bel leaves fell on the Shivling and his worship of the third prahar was also completed. This deer did not plead for mercy from the hunter, but said that it is his good fortune that he will be able to satisfy someone’s hunger. But he said that he will first leave his children with their mother. The hunter believed the deer and let it go.
After some time, the hunter saw that all the deer were moving towards him. Seeing them, the hunter took out his bow and his worship of the fourth prahar was also completed. Now that his worship of Shiva was complete, he had a change of heart. The hunter felt guilty that he hunted these mute animals to feed his family. He asked all the deer to go back. As soon as the hunter said this, the divine form of Lord Shiva appeared and he blessed the hunter with fame, glory and reputation.
Sawan Shivratri Worship Method (Sawan Shivratri Pujan Vidhi)
On the day of Shivratri, bathe the idol of Lord Shiva with Panchamrit. Then offer 8 buckets of saffron water. Light a lamp all night that day. Apply sandalwood tilak. Offer Bel Patra, Bhaang, Dhatura, sugarcane juice, Tulsi, nutmeg, lotus stalk, fruits, sweets, sweet betel leaves, perfume and alms. In the end, offer saffron kheer and distribute the prasad. Chant the mantra Om Namo Bhagwate Rudraya, Om Namah Shivaya Rudraya Shambhavay Bhavanipataye Namo Namah. Recite the Shiva Purana on this day. Ratri Jagran is also done on the day of Mahashivratri.
