Shiromani Akali Dal has expelled its patron and senior leader Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa from primary membership for anti-party activities. This decision has been taken a day after Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa targeted party chief Sukhbir Singh Badal and rejected the expulsion of eight rebel leaders.

This decision was taken unanimously by the three-member disciplinary committee of the party, headed by its president Balwinder Singh Bhundar. The other two members of the committee were Maheshinder Singh Grewal and Gulzar Singh Ranike.

After this decision, Maheshinder Grewal said that the Disciplinary Committee believes that Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa could not maintain the dignity of his post. He is not only issuing unauthorized statements but is also working against the constitution of the party and its rich and glorious traditions. He said that the Disciplinary Committee has taken into account the various statements issued by Dhindsa in recent times as well as the way he led the 8 leaders expelled from the party.

‘Dhindsa forced me to take this step’

Discipline Committee chairman Balwinder Singh Bhundar said that Dhindsa forced the party to take this step. He said that the party, on its part, had invited all the disgruntled party leaders to attend party meetings and discuss their misunderstandings in the party forum. Instead of doing so, the disgruntled leaders became part of the conspiracy hatched in Nagpur to weaken and divide the party. These leaders have also given credence to the baseless allegations of the main culprit of the desecration of Sri Guru Granth Sahib in 2015. When appropriate action was taken against them, Dhindsa tried to defend the leaders and even tried to mislead party workers. Now the party has taken strict action against Dhindsa, to set the record straight.

‘Indiscipline will not be tolerated at any cost’

The members of the disciplinary committee said that indiscipline will not be tolerated at any cost and appealed to Punjabis to stay away from opportunistic individuals who have conspired with the agencies to weaken the party. The committee also clarified that it is working as per the party constitution and has been entrusted with the task of taking necessary action under the powers given by the working committee to SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal.

‘Party patron has no right to take decisions’

The committee members said that the expelled leaders are free to call a meeting of the working committee, while they claimed that 98 percent of the members of the working committee have expressed faith in the leadership of Sukhbir Singh Badal. Maheshinder Grewal clarified that the post of party patron is honorary and he does not have the right to take any decision on behalf of the party. He also rejected Dhindsa’s claim that the expelled leaders had tried to start a reform movement in the party. He said that “forming a parallel organization along with the presidium can only be considered an anti-party activity”.

Maheshinder Grewal made these allegations against Dhindsa

Maheshinder Grewal said that Dhindsa, as chairman of the disciplinary committee, had expelled the then SGPC president Gurcharan Singh Tohra from the party because he had appealed to Parkash Singh Badal to appoint him as the party’s acting president. He also explained how Dhindsa found nothing wrong in Sukhbir Singh Badal’s conduct when he returned to the party on March 5 this year, but when his son Parminder Dhindsa was not given a party ticket from Sangrur, he started questioning Badal’s leadership.

Speaking about the role of another expelled leader Prem Singh Chandumajra, Grewal said Chandumajra had approved Operation Black Thunder as a cabinet minister in 1985 and also praised the “pardon” given to the Dera Sirsa chief. He said the party president was good to Chandumajra as long as he accepted all his demands, including two assembly seats for his family and a Lok Sabha ticket for himself, even though he had no natural right to it.
