Why did Rahul Gandhi become so kind to Mamta Banerjee that he sacrificed Adhir Ranjan?

A one-time defeat has been very costly for Adhir Ranjan Chaudhary, who has been a Lok Sabha MP since 1999. In 2019, Adhir Ranjan Chaudhary was also made the leader of the Lok Sabha Congress, and before the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections, he was sent as the state Congress president. Since then, he was handling both the responsibilities, but as soon as he lost the election, it seems as if he has come on the road.

More than losing the post of West Bengal Congress, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhary is seen to be angry with the manner in which he was removed. And he is so angry that he is openly venting his anger on Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge.

Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury has been a staunch opponent of Mamata Banerjee since the beginning, and the Trinamool Congress leader is also believed to be the reason for his removal from the post of Bengal Congress President. Reacting to his anger, TMC leader Kunal Ghosh has said that it seems Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury wants to be suspended from the Congress… he is trying to provoke… he may have already talked to the BJP.

Seeing the opportunity, NDA’s Dalit leader Ramdas Athawale has given his own suggestion, ‘I request Adhir Ranjan ji… if he is being insulted in Congress, then he should leave Congress… I invite him to join NDA or my party RPI.’

Whatever happens next, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhary’s career is currently going through a very difficult phase. It is true that Rahul Gandhi needs Mamata Banerjee’s support very much, but he was neither fighting against TMC in Bengal for himself, nor was he fighting on his own will – would Adhir Ranjan have been able to do anything without Rahul Gandhi’s will?

After all, there was trust in Adhir Ranjan, that is why he was made the leader in the Lok Sabha, and then he was given the command of Congress in Bengal elections. According to Adhir Ranjan, he got a call to call a meeting of Bengal Congress, but what happened after that shook him to his core. Adhir Ranjan says, I knew that the meeting was called under my chairmanship. Till that time I was the president, but at the beginning of the meeting when Ghulam Ahmed Mir was addressing, he addressed me as former president… only then did I come to know that I have become the former Congress president of West Bengal. Congress General Secretary Ghulam Ahmed Mir is the Congress in-charge of West Bengal.

Adhir Ranjan Chowdhary was a hurdle in the Congress-TMC alliance

Adhir Ranjan Chaudhary was very upset with the defeat in the Lok Sabha elections. Adhir Ranjan’s condition in Congress was the same as that of Smriti Irani in BJP. As soon as the election results came, he started saying, now even my bungalow will be lost. Adhir Ranjan said, my daughter is studying… she sometimes uses this place for her studies… I will have to find a new house there now… because I do not have any house.

That’s when I said, I call myself a BPL MP… I have no other skill apart from politics… Difficulties will arise for me… and I don’t know how to overcome them.

If we look at it, Adhir Ranjan has been blamed for the Congress’s defeat in West Bengal. Later, Trinamool Congress General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee had alleged that the INDIA alliance broke in West Bengal because of Adhir Ranjan Chaudhary. Actually, Adhir Ranjan Chaudhary was adamant that he would not compromise with the Trinamool Congress in West Bengal. In fact, he even said that if a compromise has to be made with Mamata Banerjee, then the command of Congress in Bengal should be given to someone else instead of him.

There is definitely sadness over the defeat, but Adhir Ranjan Chaudhary has no regrets about the fact that Congress has removed him from the responsibility of Bengal, rather he feels bad that this was not told to him properly. Adhir Ranjan Chaudhary had sent his resignation after the election results were announced, but he was not told whether his resignation has been accepted or not.

Why is Rahul Gandhi so kind to Mamta Banerjee?

During the Lok Sabha elections, Mamata Banerjee kept saying in the meetings of INDIA Block that the seat sharing should be finalized as soon as possible. Later, she started distancing herself from the Congress, and just a day before Rahul Gandhi reached West Bengal with Nyay Yatra, she announced that TMC will not form any electoral alliance with anyone, but will contest the Lok Sabha elections alone.

Even then, the Congress was being very soft towards Mamata Banerjee. Neither Rahul Gandhi nor Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh were ever heard saying anything about Mamata Banerjee. Rather, it was said many times that the Congress is in talks with TMC and a solution will come out of the talks, but till the end no solution came out.

Before the election results came out, Mamata Banerjee made a statement that if the INDIA Block government is formed, TMC will support it from outside, and then after some time Mamata Banerjee made the picture a little more clear and said that she is also in the INDIA Block. The government was not formed, but the opposition definitely emerged stronger.

The Parliament session itself started with controversy. Congress claimed that the most senior MP K. Suresh was not made the Protem Speaker. In protest, Congress declared K. Suresh as the Speaker candidate from India Block. Mamata Banerjee was extremely unhappy with this, and TMC refused to sign the support letter. TMC alleged that it was not even consulted before declaring the candidate.

When Rahul Gandhi came to know about the whole matter, he himself took the responsibility of removing Mamata Banerjee’s displeasure. Rahul Gandhi immediately called Mamata Banerjee. The two leaders talked for about half an hour – and Mamata Banerjee agreed.

Till now the entire opposition has been seen together in the Lok Sabha. Trinamool Congress MPs have also not been seen behaving differently. There has been no lack of respect for Rahul Gandhi as the Leader of the Opposition from the TMC MPs. At least Mahua Moitra has addressed Rahul Gandhi as our leader.

But recently it was also seen that Mamata Banerjee did not join the boycott of the Niti Aayog meeting. And she took Hemant Soren along with her. Along with the Congress Chief Ministers, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin also did not attend the Niti Aayog meeting.

Mamata Banerjee attended the meeting, but walked out in the middle. Mamata Banerjee alleged that her mic was switched off within 5 minutes. Many NDA leaders rejected Mamata Banerjee’s claim, in fact BJP leader and Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar even said that Mamata Banerjee had already made up her mind and did what was planned.

Whatever may be the reality, but from Mamata Banerjee’s stand it seems that she had gone to the Niti Aayog meeting with the intention of teaching a lesson to the Congress – and it seems that Rahul Gandhi has also understood that Mamata Banerjee’s full support is necessary to fight the BJP at the Centre.

And Mamata Banerjee’s full support cannot be obtained as long as Adhir Ranjan Choudhary remains a wall in the way – and this seems to be the reason why it has been decided to sacrifice Adhir Ranjan Choudhary to bring Mamata Banerjee closer.
