Here, 4 beautiful villages situated in the catchment of Cheliyar river, Choorlammala, Attamala, Noolpuzha and Mundakai have been destroyed after the landslide.

So far 256 people have died in this disaster in Wayanad and about 170 people are still missing. Out of these, Mundkai village has completely turned into a ghost village. The accident happened two days ago (30 July), but even now the bodies are being taken out from the debris. 1200 rescuers are running rescue operations here. Rescue operations are being carried out with great difficulty amidst a thick layer of mud and rocks.

Only 34 houses left out of 500!

According to local media reports, there were about 450-500 houses in Mundakai, but now only 34 to 49 houses are left in this area. After the landslide on July 30, mud, water and large rocks came down from the mountains and turned Mundakai into rubble. Most of the houses in the village have been badly damaged in this accident. Some houses have completely collapsed and no trace of them is left.

The Army, Navy and Air Force are carrying out a massive rescue operation in Mundkai. The process of recovering dead bodies from the rubble continues one after another. People are looking restless to find the bodies of their relatives from the rubble. Those who have been rescued are also spending their days in relief camps. The entire village has become deserted.

Before being destroyed by a massive landslide, Mundakai was like any other village. Apart from roads and several concrete houses, it had shops and most of the essential amenities. Churmana, about 6.5 km from here, is a popular tourist destination, which also has attractive waterfalls named Suchipara and Vellolippara. Tourists often come here to spend their holidays.
