IPL 2025 Mega Auction Updates: How many players will be retained in a team for the mega auction of IPL 2025, what will be the number of retention? Should there be an impact rule? The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) called a meeting on Wednesday (31 July) regarding all these things. In this meeting, the discussion on the relevance and future of the mega auction turned into a debate.

A heated debate was witnessed between some franchise owners in the meeting held on the fourth floor of the BCCI headquarters at Wankhede Stadium. After this meeting, BCCI now said that it will inform the franchises about its decision in the coming few weeks.

Many claims have been made about this meeting in the report of ‘Cricbuzz’. The report says that many teams also showed their opposition to the mega auction. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) owner Shahrukh Khan and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) CEO Kavya Maran demanded to stop it.

Keep in mind that Shahrukh’s KKR and Kavya’s team SRH were the finalists of IPL 2024. Both the teams want to keep their players together. However, for this both of them argued that they want to do this for the brand-building of the team and fan engagement.

Kavya Maran supported mini auction
However, in this meeting, KKR got the support of SRH owner Maran, who said that the priority of her franchise is mini auction instead of mega auction every year. After the meeting, Kavya said – It takes a lot of time to build a team and as discussed, it also takes a lot of time and investment for young players to mature. It took Abhishek Sharma three years to bring consistency in his performance. There are many such examples in other teams as well.

Was there an argument between Shahrukh and Ness Wadia?
A BCCI source who was present in the meeting said that Shah Rukh strongly put forward his views against the mega auction. There was a time when the KKR owner had a heated argument with Punjab Kings co-owner Ness Wadia over retention numbers.

Ness Wadia said I have no enmity with anyone
After this meeting, Wadia denied getting involved in any kind of argument with the KKR owner. The co-owner of Punjab Kings said on this issue, ‘I have known Shahrukh for more than 25 years. There is no animosity here. Everyone gave their views and had their own opinion. Ultimately, you have to look at all the stakeholders and do what is best for everyone. This is the most important thing.’

Parth Jindal told what happened in the meeting?
Parth Jindal of Delhi Capitals was also among those who spoke against excessive retention in the IPL owners’ meeting. He said- I was surprised that there was a debate on whether there should be a mega auction or not. Some people said that there should be no mega auction at all, there should only be a mini auction. I am not in any camp.

Parth Jindal opposed the impact rule
At the same time, Jindal said that he is also against continuing the impact player rule. Jindal said – Some people say that this gives new players a chance to play in the IPL, some people do not want it because it is harmful for Indian cricket in terms of the development of all-rounders. In such a situation, it is a mixed bag. I do not want it. Because of this rule you have different players who do not bowl in the IPL or do not bat in the IPL, this is not good for Indian cricket.
