When the budget was discussed during the monsoon session in Parliament on Tuesday, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi in Lok Sabha, BJP MP Anurag Thakur, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Akhilesh Yadav and BJP MP Sudhanshu Trivedi in Rajya Sabha gave fiery speeches. Rahul Gandhi also described Padmavyuh as a form of Chakravyuh and targeted the ruling BJP over Padma i.e. lotus.

What did Sudhanshu Trivedi say?
Responding to Rahul, Sudhanshu Trivedi gave full reference of mythology and said that goddess of wealth Lakshmi and goddess of knowledge Saraswati reside on lotus. In such a situation, if lotus keeps blooming, prosperity will remain in the country. Responding to Rahul Gandhi’s statement, he said that Chakravyuh and Padmavyuh are different. In fact, there were 36 types of formations in ancient India.

Many formations were made in the war of Mahabharata
Apart from the politics of Parliament, let us talk about the formation mentioned in mythology. The greatest story of the Dwapar era, Mahabharata, about 5000 years ago, describes the most fierce war ever fought. The war of Mahabharata lasted for 18 days and during these 18 days, at least two formations were made every day. When one team made a formation, the opposing team countered it by making another formation in response.

What is a formation?
In war, the strong arrangement in which the enemy army is surrounded and attacked is called Vyuha. In a way, it was a trap that created confusion, in which the warrior of the opposing team was to be trapped and killed or captured. In this way, a warrior was surrounded by at least three soldiers. The more soldiers there were in the army, the more effective and successful the Vyuha became.

Formations were made in the name of animals and weapons
The types of formations described in the Mahabharata are named after the shape of animals and the structure of lethal weapons. When an attack was made by forming a formation, the shape of the army’s arrangement also became like that bird, animal or weapon. It may not be understood when seen from the front, but if a drone view of the formation could be taken, the shape would be clear.

Crouch Army
In the Mahabharata, the Pandava army created the Krauncha formation for the first day of the war. Krauncha was an ancient bird resembling today’s crane, with a long neck, long pointed beak and wide spread wings. The hair on its body was somewhat hard and pointed and gave a pricking sensation when touched. The Pandavas declared war by creating the Krauncha formation and after the Kaurava army attacked, they fought with Grandfather Bhishma’s army in the same formation style.

In the Bheeshma Parva of the Mahabharata, there is a description of the formation of the Krauncha Vyuha.

The army was called Kroncharuna and was equipped with swords.
When the gods and demons fell asleep Brihaspati spoke to them. 40.
He retaliated appropriately and destroyed the enemy.
Let the kings including the Kauravas see what they have never seen before. 41.

(O Commander! The formation called Krauncha is capable of attacking all enemies; which Brihaspati had told Indra about during the Devasura war. “Create the Krauncha formation in the correct form which will destroy the enemy army. Today, all the kings should see that unseen formation with their own eyes along with the Kauravas.)

Garuda Army Lord Vishnu’s vehicle Garuda was the ancestor of birds like eagles and hawks of today. Garuda bird was considered to have large wings and was capable of flying high at a high speed. Its beak was strong, which was no less than a weapon in itself. Garuda Vyuha was considered very dangerous and difficult in the formation of the formation. On the second day, Grandfather Bhishma had created it on behalf of the Kauravas, in which 10 thousand soldiers of the Pandavas were killed.

(At that time, Shantanu Kumar Bhishma, the grandfather of the Kuru clan, created the great Garuda formation with the desire to ensure victory for your sons. Your uncle Bhishma himself stood at the beak in the front of that formation. Acharya Drona and Yaduvanshi Kritavarma stood at the eye positions.)

Capricorn Group The soldiers were arranged in the same way as the shape of a crocodile. In this way, the enemy army was harmed as much as possible. In the Mahabharata, Makar Vyuha was created by both the Kauravas and the Pandavas.

Tortoise formation: This turtle-shaped formation was built with great skill and strategy. At the front, a charioteer along with several soldiers stood in the turtle mouth posture. Then, several soldiers stood behind like a long neck and charioteers stood in between these soldiers. When the enemy army attacked, the charioteer standing facing forward in the Kachhapa formation would keep sliding backwards while fighting the enemy. In this way, the enemy would gradually get surrounded by the soldiers standing in a linear position and then be captured. This arrangement was such that a turtle quickly hides its mouth in its shell. The Kauravas had planned to capture Yudhishthira by forming a Kachhapa formation on the fifth day, but Arjuna had broken this formation.

Crescent formation: The half-moon military formation is called the half-moon formation. This formation was formed by Arjuna on the third day in response to the Garuda formation by the Kauravas. In this, the troops keep spreading forward in a crescent-shaped position. This helps in encircling the enemy army from the front and from both sides.

The enemy’s left hand side bit that army in the battle formation.

(Sabyasachi Arjuna, who torments his enemies, after seeing the Kaurava army’s formation, took Drishtadyumna along with him and formed a very fearsome crescent-shaped formation of his army. Bhimsena was stationed at its southern peak.)

Circle and Vajra Vyuha: Mandala means circular or chakra. This formation was created by Bhishma Pitamah on the 7th day of the Mahabharata war. In response to which the Pandavas created the Vajra formation. Vajra formation is like Indra’s Vajra. If understood properly, this Vajra was like the structure of the spine and ribs of the human body and the army was deployed in the war in this manner.

lotus or padma group The soldiers were standing like the petals of a lotus and in the middle of each petal like structure, Maharathi was made to stand. The charioteer was standing in the front and the elephant rider was standing at the back. The horsemen were standing behind the charioteer and the infantry was standing in the middle of the lotus. Acharya Drona had created this formation to save Jayadratha from Arjun. He had hidden Jayadratha in the middle of the lotus formation just like the seed is in the green part above the stem of the lotus, but due to the illusion of Shri Krishna, Jayadratha came in front and Arjun killed him.

Maze Chakravyuh has been the most talked about in Mahabharata. This is also because Abhimanyu was martyred after getting trapped in this Chakravyuh. It was like a spiral, like the shape of today’s mosquito coil. In this, the soldiers were made to stand in a circular manner. The infantry soldiers kept running forward in a circular shape and the spiral system was not broken. As soon as a soldier fell, the soldier behind him took his place. There was a corridor-like space between the soldiers of Chakravyuh, and in this there were gates, on which the Maharathi stood. Abhimanyu entered the first gate after defeating Jayadratha, but Jayadratha had stopped the rest of the Pandavas. That is why they remained outside. Abhimanyu kept getting surrounded inside. In the end, seven Maharathi surrounded him and killed him.

Apart from this there are some other formations which were made in Mahabharata
Penalty – stick formation
Shaktivyuha – car type formation
Varahvyuh – pig array
Listview – needle like structure
Archery- bow shaped array
Urmivyuha – Ocean wave formation (created in response to Makara and Kurma formation)
