A strange sight was seen in Yamgarni village of Nipani taluk of Belagavi district in Karnataka. An enthusiastic crowd garlanded a black Indie dog, paraded it and organized a feast in its honor. For the villagers, the return of the lost dog is a miracle. The dog, fondly called Maharaj, was lost in the crowd in the pilgrimage town of Pandharpur in South Maharashtra. After this, it traveled about 250 kilometers alone and returned to its village in Belagavi, North Karnataka.

In the last week of June, when Maharaj went on his annual ‘wari padayatra’ to Pandharpur, he had come with his owner Kamlesh Kumbhar. Kumbhar said that he comes to Pandharpur every year on Ashadh Ekadashi and Kartiki Ekadashi.

He told that this time the dog also went with him. According to the agency, Kamlesh Kumbhar told that Maharaj has always liked to listen to bhajans. Once he also went with me on a padyatra to Jyotiba temple near Mahabaleshwar.

The dog disappeared after visiting the temple

For about 250 km, the dog followed its owner, who was walking with a group of his friends singing bhajans. Kumbhar said that after visiting Vithoba temple, I noticed that the dog was missing. When I went to look for it, the people there told me that the dog had gone with some other group.

He further said that I still searched for him everywhere, but could not find him. So, I thought that maybe people are right that he has gone with someone else. I returned to my hometown on July 14. Kumbhar said in surprise that the very next day Maharaj was standing in front of my house, wagging his tail as if nothing had happened. After this, the villagers organized a feast on Maharaj’s return.
