Hamas chief Ismail Haniyya has been killed in Iran’s capital Tehran. Haniyya and his bodyguard have reportedly died in the Israeli attack. Hamas and Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) have confirmed this. Hamas has said in its statement that Palestinian group leader Ismail Haniyya has been killed in a house in Tehran in an Israeli attack. This is the second major attack by Israel in 12 hours.

Earlier on Tuesday (30 July), Haniya had attended the swearing-in ceremony of Iran’s new President Masoud Pezeshkian. How close Haniya was to Iran can be gauged from the fact that he is seen in a group photo with representatives of various countries. However, he did not know that he would be killed that very night. Since the attack on Israel on 7 October last year, Haniya was hiding sometimes in Qatar and sometimes in Iran. But Israel entered Iran and killed him.

Haniya had also met Iran’s Supreme Leader Imam Sayyed Ali Khamenei yesterday. The very next day, i.e. on Wednesday morning, Israel targeted the house in which Ismail Haniya was staying with his security personnel. The last pictures of Hamas chief Ismail Haniya’s meeting before the Israeli action have surfaced.

Iran’s Supreme Leader had shared the pictures a few hours ago

Iran’s Supreme Leader Imam Khamenei met Hamas Chief Ismail Haniya and General Secretary Ziad al-Nakhlah. Khamenei had also posted pictures of the meeting on his X handle 13 hours ago, i.e. on July 30 at 8.05 pm. Khamenei wrote, “Met Ismail Haniya, Political Bureau Chief of the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement Hamas, and Ziad al-Nakhlah, Secretary General of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad Movement.”

At present, with the killing of Haniya, two enemies of Israel have been wiped out in 12 hours. On Tuesday, the Israeli army claimed to have killed Hezbollah’s top commander Fouad Shukar in Beirut. Earlier in April 2024, Israeli security forces had also killed Haniya’s three sons. Israel had killed Haniya’s three sons by carrying out an airstrike on the Gaza Strip. The Israeli army IDF had said that Haniya’s three sons Amir, Hazem and Mohammad were going to carry out terrorist activities in Gaza, meanwhile all three came under the grip of air strikes.

Hamas is a Palestinian Islamic organization and political party, founded in 1987. Its full name is Islamic Resistance Movement. The main objective of Hamas is to establish Islamic rule in the Palestinian territories and to resist Israel. This organization is most active in the Gaza Strip and has been listed as a terrorist organization by many countries. Hamas also maintains its presence through social services, education and health services.

Why did Hamas come into the limelight in the Israel-Palestine war?

Hamas came into the limelight in the Israel-Palestine war because this organization carries out rocket attacks and other attacks on Israel from the Gaza Strip. There are frequent violent clashes between Hamas and Israel, which include attacks on civilians and military targets. Apart from this, Israel and the international community view Hamas as a terrorist organization due to its political and military activities. Hamas’ Islamic ideology and its role in the Palestinian freedom struggle make it a center of controversy.

What did Israel retaliate against?

On October 7, 2023, Hamas fighters suddenly entered Israel and fired heavy rockets and bombs. More than 1200 people were killed in the attack. Hamas fighters took 250 Israelis hostage and took them to the Gaza Strip. Hamas still holds 150 Israelis hostage. This is the reason why Hamas and its leader were at the top of Israel’s hit list. Haniya has run the government in Gaza for seven years.

At the same time, Hamas claims that more than 39 thousand Palestinian civilians have died so far in Israeli attacks. Israel says that it has killed more than 14 thousand fighters of Hamas and its allies in this operation.
