So far 93 people have died in Wayanad landslide

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Tuesday said 93 people were killed and around 128 injured in a massive landslide in northern Wayanad district. CM Vijayan said the first landslide occurred around 2 am late night and was followed by another at 4.30 am, resulting in hundreds of people being trapped under the debris and many being swept away.

Rahul Gandhi represented Wayanad in the last Lok Sabha 2019. In this Lok Sabha election too, he was elected from Wayanad along with Rae Bareli, but he resigned from the parliamentary constituency in Kerala. He raised this issue during the Zero Hour in the House.

Rahul Gandhi demands compensation for Wayanad landslide

Rahul Gandhi said in the House, ‘Today there has been a massive landslide in Wayanad. The level of damage is yet to be assessed because this disaster is very big.’ He also said, ‘I have spoken to Defense Minister Rajnath Singh and Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. The central government is requested to provide all possible assistance for rescue work and medical care. Compensation should be released immediately and the amount of compensation should be increased.’

What did Priyanka Gandhi Vadra say about the Wayanad landslide

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said about this disaster, ‘I am deeply saddened to see the devastation caused by the massive landslide near Meppadi in Wayanad. My heartfelt condolences and prayers are with all those who have lost their loved ones. I hope and pray that everyone is evacuated as soon as possible. I urge the government to take immediate action to expedite relief and rescue operations and request UDF workers to come forward to provide assistance and solace to all those affected by this tragedy.’

Compensation announced for the families of the deceased and the injured

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has spoken to the Chief Minister of Kerala, relief and rescue operations are underway. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund to the next of kin of each person killed in the accident and Rs 50,000 to the injured.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said that the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), central forces, Army and even the Air Force have been deployed in the rescue and relief operations. He said that the government’s focus is currently on rescue and relief and then it will be on other fronts including rehabilitation.
