Reliance Jio, India’s leading telecom operator, has announced a tariff hike on all its prepaid and postpaid mobile plans, effective from July 3, 2024. The price increase ranges from 12% to 25% across various plan offerings, marking the first significant tariff revision by Jio in over two and a half years.
The most affordable Jio prepaid plan, previously priced at Rs 155 for 28 days with 2GB of data, will now cost Rs 189. Similarly, the popular Rs 239 plan offering 1.5GB of daily data has been revised to Rs 299, a 25% increase. Jio’s annual plan, which offered 2.5GB of daily data for Rs 2,999, will now be available at Rs 3,599, the highest hike among the revised plans.
Jio has also made changes to its postpaid offerings, with the entry-level plan (30GB data with unlimited calling) increasing from Rs 299 to Rs 349, and the 75GB plan rising from Rs 399 to Rs 449.
According to Jio, the tariff hike is a step towards “furthering industry innovation and driving sustainable growth through investments in 5G and Artificial Intelligence.” The company claims that nearly 85% of the total 5G cells operational in India are by Jio, and it continues to provide a superlative 5G experience with truly unlimited 5G data on its leading plans at no additional cost to users

Rival telecom operator Bharti Airtel has also announced similar tariff increases, with its prepaid plans seeing an 11-21% hike and postpaid plans ranging from Rs 449 to Rs 1,199. Experts suggest that the tariff hikes are necessary for the telecom industry to achieve a sectoral average revenue per user (ARPU) of Rs 200-217 by fiscal year 2025-26.
The telecom sector has been investing heavily in 5G rollouts, with Jio and Airtel collectively spending over Rs 2 lakh crore, without immediate returns. The tariff revisions are seen as a move to monetize these investments and improve the industry’s financial health, which has been under pressure due to the low return on capital employed (RoCE).
While the tariff hike may lead to some subscriber churn, industry analysts believe the upside benefits for the telecom operators are far greater, as they aim to enhance revenue in a competitive market.
