Asha Kiran Home, built for mentally retarded children and people in Delhi, is now becoming a death chamber. In a conversation with Aaj Tak, a woman working at Asha Kiran said that the conditions inside are very bad. The facilities that the children got earlier are not available now. Neither do they get proper diet. Till 4 years ago the children used to get milk, eggs, etc., but now everything has been stopped. They only get dal and roti. The woman said that at least 20 to 25 children inside are still suffering from TB. Meanwhile, National Women’s Commission Chairperson Rekha Sharma has reached the center. Sources from the SDM office said that the capacity of the shelter home is about 500, but there are about 950 people inside.

Sources said there is no epidemic situation inside the centre. We did not find any people who died due to disease-related reasons. ‘Only 2 children from the shelter home were admitted to the hospital. There is also a health unit inside the hospital. The centre had reported overcrowding in the shelter home only a week ago and we informed the agencies about it.’

Sources said the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) also went inside the shelter home but never made any complaint about the unhygienic conditions inside. We will send our report to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC). A separate report will also be submitted on this matter. We are waiting for the post-mortem report to ascertain the exact cause of death.

Exclusive documents obtained by Aaj Tak have revealed that 27 people have died here in the last 7 months. While 13 people died in July.

Minister Atishi ordered a magisterial inquiry
Delhi minister Atishi has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the deaths at Asha Kiran. The documents that Aaj Tak has got hold of clearly mention how people died month after month. The most shocking thing is that in the month of July alone, 13 people died within 20 days.

There have been continuous deaths here this year, including 3 in January, 2 in February, 3 in March, 2 in April, 1 in May, 3 in June and 13 in July. Whereas in the year 2023, a total of 13 people died between January and July.

India Today asked Atishi if these deaths did not come to the notice of the government as the department has no head. To this, Revenue Minister Atishi said, severely disabled persons also have serious physical morbidity. Death should be medically related to this. She said that those living in Asha Kiran Shelter Home are given continuous medical care not only in the home medical center but also in various hospitals in Delhi. We have immediately ordered a magisterial inquiry. Officials of the concerned department are not involved in such investigation. Action will be taken after the magisterial report comes.

Why are deaths occurring?
Asha Kiran Home located in Sector 3 of Rohini houses mentally challenged children and adults. It is claimed that they are well looked after here. But the mysterious deaths that have occurred here in the last few years raise many questions.

According to the confirmed news received by Aaj Tak from sources, the mentally challenged people are not looked after properly in this Asha Kiran Home run by the Delhi government. They lack facilities. Perhaps this is the reason that when we tried to talk to the administration here, no one was ready to talk. The question is whether an attempt is being made to hide the deaths happening here.

There have been deaths here before
Earlier also, many such deaths had occurred and there was a lot of hue and cry. Action was taken against the officials. Earlier, there had been one or two or at most 10 deaths. But this time the matter is of 13 deaths within a month. However, the reason being cited is the non-availability of post-mortem reports.
