90 villages, seven murders and one unknown killer… 14 teams of UP Police are searching for this dreaded serial killer

There is an area in Bareilly district of Uttar Pradesh where women are very scared. These days the women there are afraid to even step out of their houses. They avoid going towards their fields. As soon as evening falls, they close the doors of their houses. Those women do this because they are also afraid of death like everyone else. Such a death which comes without any reason. That death targets the women of that area and disappears. Actually, we are talking about that area of Bareilly where in the last few months, not one or two, but more than half a dozen women have been brutally killed.

No clue found of the murderer
Last year, i.e. in the year 2023, on the first of July, a woman was murdered in Bareilly, UP. The murder took place in Anandpur village of Shahi police station area. The murderer killed Premvati, about 55 years old, by strangulating her with the pallu of her own sari. The police started the investigation, but they could not find any clue of the murderer.

6 women murdered one by one
After this, in the next five months, women were murdered in similar ways in different villages of Bareilly and the number reached six. In almost all the cases, the murderer targeted women in the age group of 50 to 60 years and in all the cases, the murder weapon was the pallu of the woman’s sari or her dupatta. But the Bareilly police kept investigating each case separately and could not find the murderer in any of these cases.

The files of these cases kept gathering dust in police stations
Yes, it is certain that during these five months, three more women were also murdered and the police was successful in solving those cases. But the remaining six cases were unsolved. They remained unsolved. If seen from this perspective, the last murder in this series took place some eight months ago, i.e. in November 2023. The families of the women who were murdered kept wandering for justice, but the files of those murder cases kept gathering dust in the police stations.

2 July 2024, Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh
But now after eight months, something has happened which has once again alerted the police. It so happened that this time again a woman was murdered in a rural area of Bareilly. The murder took place in a village in the same Shahi Thana area where the first murder of this series took place a year ago. This time also the murderer took the life of a 45-year-old woman by strangulating her with the pallu of her sari in the same manner in which the women were murdered earlier.

Same method of killing all the women
Obviously, all these things were pointing towards the fact that some serial killer is behind these murder cases, not just now but after the second or third murder, because in almost all the cases, not only the method of murder was the same, but in every case the victims of the killer were women. And their age was around 50 to 60 years. That is, there was an amazing similarity in all these murder cases. From then till now, the media linked all these murder cases with each other and kept expressing the suspicion of a serial killer being involved in them.

At first the police was not ready to accept serial killing
But this is too much, Bareilly police did not consider it necessary to consider these cases as serial killing cases and kept investigating all the cases separately. When after eight months, again a woman was murdered in a village of Bareilly with the same modus operandi and the matter went from Bareilly to Lucknow Police Headquarters.

Some women’s lives could have been saved this way
Only then did the Bareilly police realise that this could be a case of serial killing and only after a whole year did the Bareilly police get these sketches of the suspected serial killer prepared in this case, that is, if the Bareilly police had woken up a year ago, that is, in July 2023, then perhaps so many women would not have been murdered one by one and the mysterious serial killer would have been arrested earlier.

The two sketches are similar to each other
Now the sketches of the suspected serial killer released by Bareilly police have come to light. Obviously, the women who became victims of the serial killer are no longer in this world, but these sketches have been prepared on the basis of testimony and identification of the people living in the villages around which the women were murdered. And surprisingly, out of the three sketches, two sketches are exactly similar to each other.

Sketch number 1 and 2
In both these sketches, the suspected murderer has a broad forehead, less or short hair, round face, large eyes and flat nose, while in both the sketches, eyewitnesses have described the murderers as wearing checked shirts.

Sketch No.3
Whereas in the third photo, the appearance of the suspected murderer is slightly different; his hair is neatly done, the nose is thin and long, the face is square and the murderer is wearing a round neck T-shirt.

The serial killer has been on the loose for a year
That is, the clues hidden in the sketch indicate that one or two such serial killers may be involved in this case of murder of women. But it can only be called the laziness of Bareilly police that despite so much time passing, this case of murder of women is unsolved and the serial killer has been roaming free for almost a year. But this is the story of foolishness or negligence of Bareilly police.

Similarities in seven unsolved cases
If we look at the murder cases that happened in the last one year, it becomes clear that a psycho killer is behind these murders. We will talk about the similarity seen in all the seven unsolved murder cases, but first let us quickly take a look at the list of those women who became victims of this serial killer.

01 July 2023 – 55-year-old Premvati was murdered in Anandpur village of Shahi police station area
21 July 2023 – 50-year-old Dhanvati murdered in Kulcha village of Shahi police station area
01 November 2023 – 65-year-old Mahmoodan was murdered in Lakhimpur village of Sheeshgarh police station area
09 November 2023 – 65-year-old Omvati was murdered in Khanpur village of Fatehganj police station area
20 November 2023 – 65-year-old Dularo Devi was murdered in Khursaini of Shahi police station area
26 November 2023 – 63-year-old Urmila Devi was murdered in Jagdishpur village of Sheeshgarh police station area
02 July 2024 – Murder of 45-year-old Anita in village Bujhiya Jagir of Shahi police station

The area of strike is within a radius of a few kilometers
This list shows that the serial killer carried out all the crimes in three police station areas of Bareilly’s rural district and if we talk about these police station areas, then all these areas are adjacent to each other. That means the serial killer’s area of strike is also within a radius of a few kilometers. In such a situation, finding him is probably not as difficult as it would have been if his area of attack was spread across the entire district or outside the district. But when the Bareilly police could not understand that these murder cases were serial killings for a whole year, then how could it search for a serial killer?

The modus operandi of the serial killer
Now let’s talk about the modus operandi of this killer, due to which the murders of all these women are being seen as serial killings. The killer is killing only women in the age group of 50-60. He usually kills in the afternoon in the deserted areas of the village. He kills everyone by strangulation. In all the murders, he kills the women by using the pallu or dupatta of their sari. There is no evidence of rape or molestation of women in any case. Most of the murders are in or around sugarcane fields. And in all the cases, the family members of the women have denied any enmity. That is, the motive of the murder is not clear and this often happens in cases of psycho killers.

Only women became victims of the murderer
Obviously, all these things indicate that a serial killer is behind the frequent murders of women in Bareilly. But who is that serial killer? And why is he selectively killing women of a particular age, this is the biggest question at the moment. Whoever the killer is, he is selectively targeting elderly women. Till now he has neither killed any man nor any young girl or woman. But this is not the only pattern of murder of women, which connects these cases with each other, rather there are many other things in this series of murders of women, which point towards serial killing.

The method of murder and the weapon are also exactly the same
If the families of the women who fell prey to the murderer are to be believed, the bodies of all the women were found in deserted areas around the village and almost all the women were strangled to death. These murders were committed when the women had gone out alone. In almost all the cases, the murderer used something like a dupatta or gamchha to kill the women. That is, not only is the age group of the women who died the same, but the method and weapon of murder are also exactly the same.

Police are unable to find the motive of the murderer!
Now let us talk about that without which no murder case can be complete or in other words without which no murder takes place in the world i.e. motive. Because it is said that there is some motive behind any murder. But the way women are being murdered one after the other in Bareilly, the police is unable to find any motive behind it. Perhaps this is the reason why the police is unable to solve these cases… Actually, there is no evidence of any incident of sexual attack i.e. rape or molestation with any of the women who became victims of the murderer. On top of that, the money or jewelry they had was also found intact. That is, the reason behind these murders is neither rape nor robbery. In such a situation, the question is that why is the murderer killing women?

No hostility, no rape and no robbery
However, the reason for murder of women is not just rape or robbery. The reason for murder can also be enmity with someone. But the family members of these six women killed in the last six months are denying that they had any enmity with anyone. And this is the reason why the police is facing a lot of difficulty in solving these cases. And perhaps this is the reason why the cases are being linked to serial killing. Because this has been seen many times before, when mentally unstable people or a psycho killer starts targeting people of a particular class, whether he has any enmity with them or not. Initially, even the Bareilly police took these cases lightly. They were looking at all these cases separately from each other.

Fear of an anonymous killer in 90 villages
The fear of an unknown serial killer has spread in about 90 villages of three police station areas of Bareilly. He targets lonely women from time to time and then disappears in the crowd. This has been going on for the last one year and now the number of women falling prey to the mysterious serial killer has increased to seven. In such a situation, people of villages are scared. Women have started fearing to go out of the house alone. Agriculture is getting affected and people’s lives are as if confined within the four walls of the house.

Bareilly police came into action like this
But then the question arises that why this serial killer has been killing so many women intermittently for the last one year and why is the police not doing anything? So the answer is that till now the police was not considering these murder cases as cases of serial killing. When after a gap of about 8 months the serial killer again killed another woman and the same modus operandi was used in the murder, then the Bareilly police got suspicious and on the orders of the DGP the police made a sketch of the mysterious serial killer and started searching for him. The sketch was floated on social media, his posters started being pasted.

Police deployed 14 teams in search of the murderer
Currently, after a year, Bareilly police has formed 14 different teams to catch this serial killer. Seven teams are of uniformed policemen, while 7 teams in which policemen have been asked to search for the killer in plain clothes. Police has started searching for the suspected serial killer by setting up check posts in different villages and the policemen searching for the serial killer have been told to reach every village in or around which women were murdered and try to gather information about the serial killer. Policemen have been asked to collect information about the suspected people by interrogating the people living there and record all the information in a special register present in the police station, so that by matching that information, an attempt can be made to understand who could be the serial killer among the lakhs of people living in the district. Apart from this, searching with drones, monitoring of CCTV footage and other methods are being used. Obviously, catching this serial killer is a big challenge for the police at the moment.
