The Israeli Air Force bombed Lebanon’s capital Beirut on Tuesday, killing Hezbollah’s top military commander Fouad Shukr. Shukr was also known as Haj Mohsin. Israel had blamed Fouad Shukr for the rocket attack on the occupied Golan Heights. The Israeli army said in a statement, “Our fighter planes killed Fouad Shukr, the most senior military commander of the terrorist organization Hezbollah and the head of its strategic unit, in Beirut.” Let us tell you that Hezbollah is one of the most influential Shia military groups in Lebanon and the wider Middle East.

Israeli army spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagar said in a statement, ‘Hezbollah commander Fuad Shukar was responsible for the Majdal Shams massacre.’ Let us tell you that on the evening of July 27, Hezbollah targeted a football field in northern Israel with an Iranian Falak-1 rocket. 12 children playing in the field were killed in this rocket attack. It was only after this attack that Israel vowed to take revenge and threatened Hezbollah with dire consequences. Fuad Shukar was the right hand man of Hezbollah’s Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah. He was Nasrallah’s advisor in planning and directing attacks and operations.

Daniel Hagar said Shukar was a terrorist who killed Israelis and many other innocent people He said that since the beginning of the Gaza war, Fuad Shukr led Hezbollah’s attacks on Israel. He was closely associated with the famous Hezbollah commander Imad Mugniyah. Mugniyah’s death in 2008 was a significant blow to Hezbollah, and Shukr was since seen as a key figure continuing Mugniyah’s legacy within the organization. After the death of Hezbollah commander Mustafa Badreddin in Syria in 2016, his responsibility in the organization was handed over to Fuad Shukr.

America was also looking for Fuad Shukr for four decades

It was under the leadership of Fouad Shukr that Hezbollah bombed the US Marine Corps barracks in Beirut on October 23, 1983. 241 American soldiers were killed and 128 others were injured in this attack. This bombing was one of the deadliest attacks on the US military in history. The United States had announced a bounty of 5 million dollars (about Rs 42 crore) on his head. The IDF said that in the 1990s, Hezbollah commander Shukr was directly involved in the kidnapping of the bodies of three Israeli soldiers – Benjamin Avraham, Adi Avitan and Omar Sawaid. Hezbollah killed all three Israeli soldiers while patrolling the security fence adjacent to Har Dov.

USA had announced a bounty of $5 million on Shukar

Due to his extensive involvement in terrorist activities, Shukar was declared a global terrorist by the US State Department since September 10, 2019. Shukar was a member of Hezbollah for nearly 30 years, was the head of its military wing and was considered number 2 in the organization. US Vice President Kamala Harris supported Israel while reacting to the death of Fuad Shukar. She said that Tel Aviv has every right to self-defense against a terrorist organization. Kamala Harris also emphasized the need to find a diplomatic solution to end the conflict situation in the Middle East.
