CBI has started investigating the lady doctor rape-murder case that took place in Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. A 25-member CBI team from Delhi has reached Kolkata. This team includes Additional Director and Joint Director level officers. Along with them, a 5-member team of CFSL from Delhi and a doctor from AIIMS have also reached. As soon as they reached Kolkata, CBI took the accused criminal in its custody. At the same time, CM Mamata Banerjee has demanded that CBI should ensure that this case is resolved by Sunday.

After this, all the documents of the investigation done so far were taken into custody from Kolkata Police. CBI has formed three teams, which are going to different places and investigating simultaneously. One of these teams visited the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where the body of the lady doctor was found on 9 August. The second team of CBI took the accused Sanjay Roy into its custody from Kolkata Police after the medical test.

The third team of CBI has been given the responsibility of coordination with Kolkata Police. CBI is going to present the accused in the court and demand extension of his custody. After the order of Kolkata High Court in this case, the investigation was handed over from Kolkata Police to CBI. In its order, the court had directed the police to hand over the case diary by evening and all the documents to CBI by 10 am on 14th August.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday supported the Kolkata High Court’s decision to hand over the investigation of the gruesome incident to the CBI, but criticised the CPI(M) and the BJP for politicising the incident and instigating protests. The TMC supremo also demanded that the CBI solve the case by Sunday. She said that the Kolkata Police has already completed 90 per cent of the investigation.

Mamata Banerjee, demanding that the culprits be hanged, has appealed to the protesting doctors to stop their work and return to work as health services are being badly affected. She said, “We will follow the order of the Calcutta High Court and give full support to the CBI. We have no problem with the CBI taking over the case as we want it to be solved as soon as possible.”

She said, “I will personally take to the streets on Friday and we will demand that the CBI ensures that the case is solved by Sunday. The Kolkata Police has already completed 90 per cent of the investigation and the culprits must be hanged. You can criticise me as much as you want, but please do not criticise the state. I am shocked by the malicious campaign being spread on social media. I demand that it be stopped.”
