288 state roads of Himachal closed, connection with 5 national highways also cut off, Meteorological Department issued orange alert

Rain is wreaking havoc in Himachal Pradesh. Due to heavy rains for the last several days, life has been disrupted. Flood-like conditions prevail in many districts. From roads to people’s homes, there is water everywhere. Cloudburst has caused devastation in Shimla, Kullu and Mandi. Army, ITBP, NDRF and SDRF personnel are engaged in searching for the missing people.

There are reports of damage due to heavy rains, landslides and flash floods in Lahaul, Spiti, Chamba and Sirmaur districts, but no casualties have been reported. Lahaul and Spiti Police has issued an advisory to residents and travelers to exercise extreme caution and not to cross rivers and streams.

Heavy rain alert in Himachal Pradesh

The Meteorological Department has issued an ‘orange’ alert warning of thunderstorms and lightning along with heavy to very heavy rains at isolated places in five districts of Himachal Pradesh – Kangra, Mandi, Shimla, Solan and Sirmaur. At the same time, a ‘yellow’ alert has been issued for heavy rains in the entire state till August 16. Apart from this, heavy rains occurred in many parts of the state, in which Nahan in Sirmaur recorded the highest rainfall of 168.3 mm since Friday evening, followed by 106.4 mm in Sandhole, 93.2 mm in Nagarota Surian, 67 mm in Dhaula Kuan, 62.2 mm in Jubbarhatti and 45.6 mm in Kandaghat.

According to the State Emergency Operations Center, 135 roads are closed, including 42 in Sirmaur, 37 in Kullu, 29 in Mandi, 17 in Shimla, five in Kangra, four in Kinnaur, one in Lahaul and Spiti district, while 24 electricity and 56 water supply schemes have been disrupted due to rain. The Meteorological Department has issued a warning of mild to moderate flood danger in different parts of Chamba, Kangra, Mandi, Sirmaur and Shimla districts till Sunday morning. At the same time, an alert has been issued about the possibility of damage to gardens, crops, weak structures and kutcha houses due to strong winds and waterlogging in low-lying areas.

Let us tell you that the rescue operation is going on to trace about 30 people who went missing after the cloudburst caused floods in Kullu, Mandi and Shimla districts on the night of July 31. Officials said that so far 28 bodies have been recovered and more than 100 people have died in rain-related incidents. At the same time, the state has suffered a loss of about Rs 842 crore between June 27 and August 9.

Let us tell you that during the monsoon which started from June 1, the rain deficit in the state was 28 percent till August 10 and Himachal Pradesh received 328.8 mm of rain against the average of 455.5 mm. At the same time, Kukumseri of Lahaul and Spiti district was the coldest at night, where the minimum temperature was recorded at 13.2 degrees Celsius, while Una was the hottest during the day, where the maximum temperature was recorded at 33.7 degrees Celsius. The Meteorological Department has appealed to the people not to take shelter under trees in bad weather and to maintain a safe distance from electric wires.
