25 Years of Kargil Vijay Diwas: PM Modi to Honor Martyrs in Dras
This year marks the 25th anniversary of India’s victory in the Kargil War, celebrated annually as Kargil Vijay Diwas on July 26. To commemorate the occasion, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit the Kargil War Memorial in Dras, Ladakh, to pay tribute to the brave soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice for the nation.
The Kargil War, fought between May and July 1999, was a conflict between India and Pakistan in the Kargil district of Kashmir and along the Line of Control (LOC). Pakistani forces had infiltrated Indian-controlled territory, prompting the Indian Army to launch Operation Vijay to drive them out.
After intense battles in the treacherous mountainous terrain, the Indian Army successfully recaptured strategic positions like Tiger Hill and secured victory on July 26, 1999. However, the war resulted in the loss of nearly 490 Indian soldiers.
Kargil Vijay Diwas serves as a solemn reminder of their sacrifices and a celebration of their valour, fostering a sense of national pride and unity among Indians. The stories of bravery from the war continue to inspire future generations.
During his visit, PM Modi will also carry out the first blast of the Shinkun La Tunnel Project, a 4.1 km long twin-tube tunnel being constructed at an altitude of around 15,800 feet to provide all-weather connectivity to Leh[4]. Once completed, it will be the highest tunnel in the world.
